3 Einem technischen Gebäude Poesie geben, um den Vorgang der Einäscherung für
die Angehörigen erträglich zu machen, war die Entwurfs aufgabe von Estudio Carme
Pinós in Igualada. Auf einer Anhöhe in unmittelbarer Nähe zu Friedhof und Kapelle
wurde die Gebäudeanlage um einen reinen Krematoriumsbau ergänzt. Der Neubau ist
von den Architekten bewusst „laut“ gestaltet worden und scheint mit seiner expressiven
Gebäude hülle den Schmerz des endgültigen Abschiedes zu verdeutlichen. Im Inneren
findet sich ein großzügiger Empfangsbereich mit un ver bau tem Blick in die weite
Landschaft und einer den Raum dominierenden Holz-Schie betür. Diese schleusenhafte
Tür trennt eine kammerähnliche Räum lichkeit ab, die es den Ange hö rigen ermöglicht,
dabei sein zu können, wenn der Tote seinen Weg in die Verbrennung antritt. Sinn bildlich
be trachtet gelangen die Trauernden auf diese Weise in einen geschlossenen Kos mos, der
sich ganz auf die akute Trauer und den letzten Moment mit dem Verstor benen foku s siert,
damit sie beides bewusst erleben und verarbeiten können. Sowohl der Verstor bene als
auch die Trauernden gehen damit auf eine Reise, die den Über gang vom Dies seits ins
Jenseits und vom Leben vor dem Verlust in ein Leben nach dem Verlust markiert. Betont
wird diese Gegensätzlichkeit ebenfalls durch die angewandte Formgebung und Materi a -
lität, so steht das gesamte Gebäude in einem Wechsel zwischen flächigen und linearen

... einen geschützten Raum, um Abschied nehmen zu können. • ... provides a protected space for saying goodbye. The construction task of Estudio Carme Pinós in Igualada was to add a poetic touch
3 to a technical building in order to make the process of cremation bearable for the

relatives. On a hill in close proximity to the cemetery and the chapel, the building com-
plex was complemented with a structure exclusively used for cremations. The architects
deliberately designed the new building to be “loud” and, with its expressive envelope,
it appears to clearly show the pain of the final farewell. Inside it is a spacious reception
area with an unobstructed view of the sweeping scenery and a wooden sliding door
which dominates the room. This lock-like door partitions off a room resembling a
chamber which makes it possible for the relatives to be present when the deceased set
out on their way to be cremated. Considered as a symbol, the mourners thus enter a
closed cosmos which is entirely focused on the acute mourning and the last moment
with the dearly departed so that they are able to consciously experience both situations
and to handle them. The deceased as well as the mourners thus begin a journey which
marks the transition from this world into the next and from the life before it was lost
into a life after it was lost. This opposition is also emphasized by the design and the
materials used – the whole building is therefore subject to an alternation of extensive
and linear design elements, of rough and smooth as well as of light and dark surfaces.
