WAHRENDORFF CLINIC
IN SEHNDE-KÖTHENWALD
The goal of tsj-architekten and brandherm+krumrey inte-
rior architecture for the Klinik für Seelische Gesundheit in
Krisen in Köthenwald was not to create a sterile hospital,
but a temporary home to let the soul heal. The new buil-
ding, rich in warm materials and colours as well as art
installations, impressively demonstrates how a clinic with
over 240 beds offers comfort and intimacy.
T he clinic has been caring for people with mental illnesses since
1862 and still bears the name of its founder, Ferdinand Wahren-
dorff. In 2023, the clinic moved to a new building located in Köthen-
wald, east of the city of Hannover, in order to bring together in one
place the acute-care wards from Ilten and Köthenwald of the steadily
growing decentralized hospital structure. Since then, eleven treatment
wards with a total of 245 beds, an emergency ward and a day clinic
have been constructed on an area of over 27,000 square metres. The
architects at tsj ensured clarity and structure by designing five so-called
houses, which are connected by a central atrium building named the
Loop. This creates a village-like structure that remains well manageable
for the patients and their visitors as well as the staff and also allows for

spots with gardens, terraces and green access systems. The Loop func-
tions as an anchor point for the public social life of the patients and
brings together the foyer, various communal and therapy rooms, vertical
access options and the dining room. The latter is particularly enhanced
by a dome construction by light artist James Turrell. The clinic intends
to scientifically monitor the effect of the installation on patients, staff
and visitors in order to demonstrate the positive effect of art on mental
illness. However, this structural measure is not the only one that aims
to enhance the well-being of the users. The brandherm+krumrey interior
architecture team also developed a corresponding range of materials
and a colour system to ensure comfort and orientation. A monochro-
me colour concept in shades of green, blue and red was used for the
different wards, which are spread over three three-storey wings. The
selection of colours and materials also counteracts the often sterile and
monochrome impression of hospitals. In the patient rooms, for example,
the beds are framed by wooden fixtures that provide storage space and,
together with various seating niches in the rooms and common areas,
offer welcome possibilities for retreating in privacy. The appealing envi-
