of terrazzo tiles, brick, and parquet, or the wood-clad walls and ceilings. The furnis-
hing relates to the existing architecture. Vintage pieces from the 1950s are combined
with high-quality and modern design furniture, always with the intention of creating
a feeling of “home”. With the help of experienced carpenters, built-in furniture was
restored and adapted for operational use. The earthy colour scheme of the old building
is combined with light pastel shades for the furnishings. Despite intensive use and high
maintenance requirements, the materials throughout the house are natural. The staff
not only cares for the patients but also takes joy in looking after this beautiful house,
which, with its architectural diversity, almost resembles a small village.
The country house are reminiscent of Wright’s Prairie Houses

Joseph Gasser was a great admirer of Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959). He would have
loved to work as a so-called fellow with the great master in America in the 1950s.
However, it was precisely at that time that he won the architectural competition
for the new Heimbach industrial school building in his home town. Built between
1956 and 1958, it became his best-known work. The reminiscence of Wright’s Prai-
rie Houses is reason enough to put the building under a preservation order. It was
always important to Gasser that his buildings have a relationship to nature, that
interior and exterior spaces merge with each other. The sweeping terraces of all his
houses bear witness to this. One of Gasser’s last works was the communal grave
(1992) in Lucerne’s Friedental, where he was buried after his death in 2018. Schnitte und Ansichten • Sections and views
