THERMAL BATHS AND
SAUNA IN LINDAU
Lake Constance is one of the largest lakes in Central
Europe, and three countries share its shores: Switzer-
land, Austria and Germany. The not only visible proxi-
mity to the Alps, the mild climate and a particularly
distinctive cultural landscape are attractions for both
locals and their guests at any time of the year – regard-
less whether for shorter or longer breaks.
T he new Therme Lindau has been built on the spot where the Eich-
wald Lido had been welcoming bathers for decades. After the old
buildings and bathing facilities were demolished in 2017, the lakeside
property became available for the new development. Due to the old
trees, the site is particularly sensitive from a landscape point of view.
4a Architekten therefore placed an elongated, horizontally layered
building on this site, which is formally aligned with the edge of the la-
keshore and blends into the landscape like a stone floe. The outdoor
area with its spacious sunbathing lawn remains as an independent
open-air bath and lido and was equipped with various pools. Inside,
too, the designers from Stuttgart took a cautious approach inspired by
the surrounding natural space. Concrete volumes, reminiscent of na-
turally occurring boulders, define the zoning on the ground floor. The
various experience areas are integrated into these volumes. From a
thematic point of view, Therme Lindau comprises three different areas
within the 13,000-square-metre space: a family and sports pool, a spa
and wellness area and a generous sauna landscape with a total of
twelve different saunas indoors and outdoors. In addition, there are
gastronomic facilities and a fitness area to complement the offerings.
Facing south towards the lakeshore, the spa opens up to allow a view
of the Lake Constance and the surrounding Alpine landscape. The ex-
pressive shapes of the pools and wellness areas also echo this moun-
tain panorama. Projections and recesses structure the building and
form distinctive external references. Centrally located in the middle of
the building, with an unobstructed view of the lake and the moun-
tains, is the spa area with an indoor pool and pool bar. To the west,
the complex is adjoined by a generous sauna area extending over two
floors and, with its outdoor area and garden, merging into the lake-
side area with a direct connection to Lake Constance. Unobtrusive ma-
terials such as fair-faced concrete, wood, tiles, mosaics and glass were
used throughout the spa. They ensure a restrained, understated am-
