E r ist der fünftgrößte See Deutschlands, liegt im Südwesten Münchens und erlangte
traurige Berühmtheit durch das skandalumwitterte Ertrinken des Bayernkönigs
Ludwig II. Der Starnberger See lockt mit seinem tiefen, klaren Wasser seit jeher Wanderer
und Badefreunde an. Am Nordufer zwischen zwei kleinen Jachthäfen liegt das Seebad
Starnberg aus den 1970er-Jahren. Nach dreijähriger Renovierung können Badegäste seit
Juli diesen Jahres den Sommer am See im neu eröffneten Hallen- und Strandbad genie-
ßen. Seifert Hugues Architekten stärken mit ihrer Erweiterung die besondere
Aussichtslage der Gebäude. Eine transparente Hülle mit vorgehängten Lamellen fasst
Bestand und Neubau zu einer Einheit zusammen und gibt den Blick auf das
Bergpanorama frei. Einschnitte und Öffnungen belichten bisher dunkle Bereiche des
alten Bades und bilden Sichtbeziehungen zwischen innen und außen. Zum Ufer hin löst
sich die Bebauung in eine Saunalandschaft im Stil der umliegenden Bootshütten auf, wo
Holzstege und breite Stufen die Gäste zur Abkühlung im See einladen. Mit natürlichen
Materialien und hellen Farbtönen setzen die Münchner Architekten das Bad in Beziehung
zur Umgebung. Holzoberflächen, erdtonfarbenes Feinsteinzeug, matt glänzende Wände
und transparente Glaselemente bilden einen einheitlichen Materialkanon, der sich von
innen nach außen fortzieht und das neue Seebad harmonisch in die Landschaft einfügt.

I t is the fifth largest lake in Germany, is located to the southwest of Munich and gained
sad notoriety due to the drowning of the Bavarian king Ludwig II which was surrounded
by scandal. On the north shore between two small yacht marinas stands the Seebad
Starnberg from the 1970s. After three years of refurbishment, since July of this year bathers
are able to enjoy the summer by the lake in the newly opened indoor pool and the lido.
With their extension, Seifert Hugues Architekten enhance the extraordinary panoramic
position of the buildings. A transparent envelope with slats as a curtain combines the
existing and the new building into a unit and allows a view of the mountains in the dis-
tance. Incisions and openings illuminate the, until now, dark areas of the old bath and
allow visual perspectives between the inside and the outside. Towards the shore, the
development merges into a sauna landscape in the style of the surrounding small boat-
houses where wooden walkways and wide steps invite the guests to cool down in the
lake. With natural materials and bright colours, the Munich architects give the bath a ref-
erence to the surroundings. Wooden surfaces, fine stoneware in earthy colours and trans-
parent glass elements result in a consistent choice of materials which extends from the
inside to the outside and harmoniously blends the new Seebad into the scenery.
