Since the 1990s, British artist Sarah Morris has created an
impressive and diverse body of work that includes paintings,
films and sculptures. Her art reflects a deep interest in
typologies, architecture and urban structures. She blends
reality with vibrant, complex abstractions, developing a unique
visual language that explores spatial themes. Morris’s series
“Pinecones”, created in 2023, continues her exploration of
architectural forms and the symbols of the corporate world. A
characteristic feature is her technique of applying gloss paint
to canvas to create vivid geometries. Morris uses the abstract
colour elements to investigate the intersection between natural
forms, such as pinecones, and the systematic, often hierarchical
structures of businesses. The artist views her paintings as self-
generating works open to interpretation and change, thus giving
viewers the feeling of being part of a larger, constantly evolving
system. This results in virtual architectures and forms that touch
on a variety of subjects, from multinational corporations to the
cycles of nature. Her motifs reflect the dynamics and energy of
urban life, while at the same time being conceptual explorations
of how natural and artificial systems coexist and influence each
other. The 57-year-old artist lives and works in New York.
