ARCHITECTURE OFFICE
IN STUTTGART
Although there is only a linear distance of two kilome-
tres between Römerstrasse and Rosenbergstrasse in
Stuttgart, for the staff of Scope Architects the move must
have felt like a journey into a new world. They compare
the situation with the change from a sardine can to the
open sea. AIT was invited to the official inauguration of
the new office premises in mid-September.
A rranging the summer party of one's own company to be cele-
brated on a Friday 13 can be considered a courageous decision,
since popular belief associates this date with particularly serious and
many accidents. We can tell you already that in the end all worries
were unfounded, the weather remained stable and the barbecue was
a great success. The two hosts, Oliver Kettenhofen and Mike Herud,
not only celebrated the end of a successful summer on Friday, Sep-
tember 13 but also the official opening of their new office premises.
These new office has been in operation since last March, but so far

there has been no real opportunity to drink to them. This was now
done with many friends and colleagues from the Stuttgart architectu-
ral community. Kettenhofen and Herud, together with their 26-mem-
ber Scope team, have recently moved into the first and second floors
of a typical 1950s administration building with a strict grid layout. Be-
fore the start of reconstruction work, the latter also continued inside
the building in the form of dark cellular offices. Of course, these
could not remain, especially as Scope Architekten are regarded as
pioneers of contemporary, agile working environments. In accor-
dance with their own, tried and tested design philosophy, the existing
small-scale structure was abandoned in favour of an open-plan office
landscape. Only three meeting rooms and two intimate think tanks
are designed as enclosed work areas. In addition, a number of flexi-
ble short-term or touchdown workstations are available, which serve
for immediate and focused communication within project groups.
The room schedule is complemented by the centrally located mate-
rial library on the lower level and the reception and office kitchen on
the upper level. The unusual distribution of functions is due to the
large roof terrace, which adjoins the office areas on the upper floor.
While the "communication zones" are enlivened by colours and wall
graphics, the design of the workplaces is restrained and of high
value. The newly installed screed floor, in turn, conveys a busy indu-
