SOFI COSMETICS 3.0
IN NOVI SAD
„Gängige Erwartungen wurden bewusst nicht At first glance, it is not obvious that this is a shop sel-

range that are completely dominated by soft shapes, pret-

has been done differently for a nice effect.
T he shop concept of Sofi Cosmetics 3.0 in the Serbian city of Novi
Sad on the Danube breaks with all the clichés associated with
cosmetics and beauty. And hardly anyone would describe this shop as
“classically beautiful”. But that is precisely the appeal that the architectu-
re- and design firm Studio Autori from Belgrade is obviously playing with
here. Common expectations are deliberately not fulfilled. Instead, the
32-square-metre store in the old town of Novi Sad – just a few hundred
metres from the banks of the Danube – brings together things that (usual-
ly) don’t belong together: handmade natural cosmetics and a sober, tech-
nical ambience, beauty products and product displays reminiscent of
a visit to a DIY store, delicate fragrances and cool monochromes. Led
by Sofi’s philosophy in which the focus is on the fully exposed natural
ingredients, studio Autori picked a few raw and distinctive elements to
build up an overall balanced experience. In short, the design concept
plays with contradictions across the board, which is unsettling on the
one hand but creates a remarkable tension on the other. In addition to
numerous products for the face – from serums to massage rollers – the
label’s range includes body lotions, shampoos, fragrances and hand cre-
ams. The tubes and jars are presented on fireclay stones, which vary in
shape but are all dipped in a light blue colour. The hanging sliding door
at the very back of the small shop has also been incorporated into the
monochrome colour scheme. The ceiling and walls, on the other hand,
are painted in a light beige, creating a strong contrast to the dark anthra-
cite floor. Simple aluminium profiles serve as wall shelves, harmoniously
complementing the linearity of the pendant light, which is equipped with
several spotlights. Incidentally, the light is once again an in-house creati-
on by Studio Autori, providing custom lighting for the shop in the form of
subtle black arches. The studio not only designs shops for Sofi Cosmetics
(this is now the third), but also houses, showrooms, bars, offices and
furniture. The office, which currently has six employees, was founded
in 2008. It is now run by two of the original four founders, namely the
