CHEESE-TART SHOP
IN HO-CHI-MINH-STADT

W hereas, anywhere else, standing in a queue is the unpleasant part of shopping,
it becomes a visual experience in the Cheese-Tart Shop in Vietnam. On the way
to the checkout, the customers are allowed a glance at the displayed small cheese-
cakes from the Japanese Bake sweets manufacturer that are characterized by a
crunchy shell and a fluffy filling. A part of the production process can also be fol-
lowed. The objective was to best use the potential of a narrow and deep property –
which opens to the street and has a double-height ceiling – and to present the prod-
ucts like on a stage. As a design element, the stairs are of crucial importance. The way
to the sales area leads up six wide, platform-like steps. The display on seemingly
floating, slightly tilted tables which are mounted on the glass wall as well as the mir-
rored ceiling follow these stairs and emphasize the choreography. The way back is
down regular steps. In this way, the entrance and the exit are clearly zoned and
involve different paces. Due to the difference in height between the display and the
street level, the small cakes are difficult to see by the passers-by. With the help of the
mirrored ceiling, however, an attractive overview of the goods is made possible all
the same. Never before has waiting at the baker’s been so attractive.
