CASA LAB
IN MURCIA
Many people only notice how much the immediate sur-
roundings influence their wellbeing if something does
Bad not feel right – if the office chair is uncomfortable or the
kitchen counter too low. Occasionally, however, the ma-
Gästezimmer laise is deeper – as was the case for the owner of Casa
Schrank Schlafzimmer Lab. It was only possible to adapt the renovated living
space to the needs of the resident by re-structuring it.
T felt the urgent need to take the architect Laura Ortín on board. His

the life plans and needs – the more diverse the residents, the more va-
ried the solutions they are looking for! This was the beginning of a ba-
lancing act for the architect – on the one hand, changes were definitely
called for but, on the other, these had to be as resource-saving as pos-
sible in order to preserve many of the innovations that had just been
Grundriss • Floor plan carried out. The decision was made in favour of restructuring just one
section of the apartment. The kitchen as well as the bathroom and a
bedroom were left untouched. Solely the living area and the suite were
to be altered by the Spanish architect – but this in a radical way! The re-
sult is a showplace of life that is completely coordinated with the resi-
dent. A stage to tell friends and family in changing performances about
hobbies, travels and art collections. For this purpose, a curved wall se-
parates the living room from the rest of the apartment. The wooden sur-
face, which extends across the wall in sculptural waves, resembles a
theatre curtain. At the same time, the structured surface has a sound-
absorbing function so that a comfortable backdrop is thus produced
Längsschnitt • Longitudinal section into the bargain. A genuine and unique backdrop for the everyday life,
for stories about travels and the artwork the owner of the apartment
had brought back from them, which is only complemented with a sofa
and can be newly arranged again and again. The wish for an atmo-
sphere of dreams and desires – and anything but normality – is conti-
nued in the adjacent sleeping area as well. Immersed in celestial sha-
des of blue, this is where one can dream of foreign, faraway places. In-
spired by hotel suites, a microcosm of its own has been designed within
the apartment which is able to impress with a separate dressing room
and an en-suite bathroom. Laura Ortín definitely succeeded in creating
Querschnitt • Transversal section personal spaces, as different and yet as distinctive as their resident.
