W as braucht es, um ein Haus zu bauen? Folgt man Ronald Rael, Professor für Ar-
chitektur an der University of California in Berkeley, reichen dafür Sand, Schlick,
Ton, Wasser und Stroh – diejenigen Rohstoffe, die in der hochalpinen Wüste von Colorado
traditionell verwendet werden. Und einen Drucker und ein Handy, natürlich. Dass sich
inzwischen per App ganze Häuschen aus nachhaltigen Baumaterialien drucken lassen,
konnte der Direktor des printFARM Laboratory in seinem jüngst geglückten Modellver-
such unter Beweis stellen. Das feuchte Baumaterial trocknet nach dem Druck einfach in
der Sonne. Nur eine solide Dachlösung gibt es bisher noch nicht. Ideas, anyone? kk

W hat does it take to build a house? According to Ronald Rael, professor of ar-
chitecture at the University of California at Berkeley, sand, silt, clay, water
and straw – the raw materials traditionally used in the high alpine desert of Colorado
– are all that’s needed. And a printer and a cell phone, of course. In his recent suc-
cessfully completed model test, the director of the printFARM Laboratory was able
to demonstrate that entire houses can now be printed from sustainable building ma-
terials using an app. After printing, the moist building material simply dries in the
sun. Only a solid roofing solution does not yet exist. Ideas, anyone?
