                                                                                        Living right in a federal garden show – this is a privi-

                                                                                        Heilbronn. Until October and particularly when living
                                                                                        in one of the Cinari Suites, they can participate in the

                                                                                        mann Theilig & Partners here successfully implemen-
                                                                                        ted one of the 23 most innovative living concepts.

                                                                                        T  he location of the so-called Quartier der Vielfalt [district of diver-
                                                                                           sity] also reflects the programme: The innovative building situated

                                                                                        lake and, regarding its purpose as well as its façade, marks this promi-
                                                                                        nent corner position. The architects met the requirement by the com-
                                                                                        petition organizer to focus offers of shared communication and ser-

                                                                                        vices and to provide semi-public to public functions by designing an
                                                                                        entrance level which has a café operated by the non-profit Lichtenstern

                                                                                        foundation as well as a launderette which serves the whole district. 18
                                                                                        two- and three room apartments, the so-called Cinari Suites (short for
                                                                                        city-nature-river) rise five storeys above this and offer their residents a
                                                                                        hotel-like accommodation for a period of between three and 12
                                                                                        months. Due to the exposed corner location, the well-designed apart-

                                                                                        ments extend towards the lake and the BUGA (Bundesgartenschau)
                                                                                        landscape due to a surrounding loggia consisting of pre-fabricated con-
                                                                                        crete elements. Curtain-type filters of vertical aluminium fins provide

                                                                                        sual screening and, due to deliberately positioned cut-outs, produce
                                                                                        the striking, chequerboard façade appearance. The building’s exterior
                                                                                        bearing walls consist of prefabricated concrete elements and their
                                                                                        smooth and hard exposed-concrete surface is an appealing contrast to

                                                                                        the frames of silver fir of the windows, doors and fixed glazing and to
                                                                                        the oak strip parquet installed in the whole living- and sleeping area.

                                                                                        The minimalist range of materials and colours also considers mainten-
                                                                                        ance and care – an important factor for boarding-house concepts since
                                                                                        the interiors are to retain their quality and cosiness for as long as pos-
                                                                                        sible. For the interior design, Karin Kruck of Kruck + Partner Wohnbau
                                                                                        decided in favour of a durable, high-quality and unobtrusive equip-

                                                                                        ment for the wet areas, the kitchen islands and the furniture of the li-
                                                                                        ving- and the bedrooms. A roof terrace, which is accessible for all the
                                                                                        residents and can be used in various ways, complements the success-
