P anzerhalle klingt bedrohlich nach schweren Geschützen und lauten Schweiß -
arbeiten. Doch es ist Jahrzehnte her, dass in dem 1939 errichteten Gebäude in
Salzburg militärisches Gerät gewartet wurden. Heute findet man in der fast 200 Meter
langen und 50 Meter breiten Halle Büros, Läden, Veranstaltungs räume, ein Restaurant
und ein expressives Loft-Appartement. 2013 wurde ein internationaler Wettbewerb
zur Gestaltung dieser Fläche ausge schrieben, den die Wiener Architekten smartvoll
für sich gewinnen konnten. Auf 350 Quadratmetern und zwei Stockwerken ist die
Idee eines klassischen Loft-Appartements spürbar, wird aber in vieler Hinsicht
uminterpretiert. Um überall eine gleich bleibende Helligkeit zu gewährleisten, ent-
schieden sich Philipp Buxbaum und Christian Kircher, auf eine typische Galerie zu
verzichten und das obere Bandfenster frei zu lassen. Schlafzimmer, Bad und Gäste -
zimmer sind im oberen Bereich als separate Inseln verteilt und werden lediglich
durch zarte Vorhänge, Regale oder Glaswände abgeschirmt. Das Epizentrum des Lofts
ist die Küche – ein sieben Meter langer Block. Die ganze Raum komposition wird durch
eine Treppenskulptur abgerundet, die nicht nur alle Räume erschließt, sondern sie
auch zu tragen scheint. Eines der entscheidenden Materialien bei der Gestaltung des
Innenraums ist die geglättete und gewachste Betonoberfläche.

P anzerhalle [tank hall] sounds threateningly like heavy artillery and loud welding
works. But it has been decades ago that military equipment was repaired here
in the building constructed in Salzburg in 1939. Nowadays, what one finds in the hall
measuring almost 200 metres in length and 50 metres in width are offices, shops,
event rooms, a restaurant and an expressive loft. In 2013, an international competi-
tion was organized for designing this space which the architects from the Viennese
smartvoll office succeeded in winning. On 350 square metres and two levels, the con-
cept of a classic loft apartment can be felt which, however, is newly interpreted in
many respects. To ensure even brightness everywhere, Philipp Buxbaum and
Christian Kircher decided to do without a typical gallery and to leave the ribbon win-
dow unobstructed. The bedroom, the bathroom and the guestroom are positioned
across the upper area as islands and are merely screened off with delicate curtains,
shelves or glass walls. The hub of the loft is the kitchen – a block with a length of
seven metres. The whole spatial composition is complemented with sculptural stairs
which not only provide access to all the rooms but also appear to support them. One
of the essential materials in designing the complete interior is the polished and
waxed surface of the concrete.
