For some time now, upcycling has been more than just a
term for the recycling of conventional waste products.
Rather, it is a matter of developing something new from
existing, now unused objects and materials. In Warne-
münde, the principle became the basis of an impressive
hostel where overseas containers after having spent
their lives at sea now become part of a new one on land.
S ince 2017, guests of the Doch Inn can spend the night in former
overseas containers and thus experience the charm and maritime
feeling of the city up close and with the harbour and the shipyard of
Warnemünde in view. The designers from the Berlin-based Kinzo of-
fice have lovingly staged the 64 different rooms and suites, as well
as the public rooms, in accordance with the local scenery. The volu-
Lageplan • Site plan mes, measuring twelve by two and a half metres, are equipped in a
slightly rough way with a touch of industrial charm, yet casual and
homely. The building complex designed by Holzer Kobler Architektu-
ren is divided into two parts: The high, inviting entrance hall, a re-
staurant, a bar, a self-catering kitchen, workplaces on an integrated
gallery, and a climbing hall are located in the two-storey plinth struc-
ture made of steel, concrete, and glass. A complete glass front facing
the street not only allows daylight to enter the interior, but also
opens up a view to the public areas. Here in the restaurant and bar
area, the seemingly randomly positioned stack of Euro pallets, which

core of upcycled, sound-insulated overseas containers is positioned
on top. The staggered modules shine in four bright colours, which are
also repeatedly used throughout the interior. In order to transform
the unusually proportioned containers into habitable bunks, they
were fitted out with precisely fitting fixtures – including a bathroom.
Generous upholstered furniture made of natural materials in muted
colours round off the furnishings. The container hostel provides 64
rooms with a total of 188 beds in four different types of containers:
Spacious double rooms and practical four-bed rooms were created
from 30-square-metre High Cube sea containers. Where two contai-
ners were welded together, they provide generously sized harbour
suites or inexpensive eight-bed dormitories. On the upper floor,
guests can end the day in the hostel’s spa, enjoying another view of
the port facilities – and dreaming of distant countries and adventures
