PRIMARY SCHOOL
IN LUDWIGSBURG
With the Fuchshofschule in Ludwigsburg, VON M
demonstrates modern and climate-friendly timber con-
struction. Designed as a “filled bookshelf on a playg-
round”, the Stuttgart architects provide amble space
for individual development while creating a pleasant
learning environment and optimal starting conditions
for 616 primary-school children.
T his primary school really and truly sets an example! Not only
because of the undoubtedly excellent teaching staff, but above
all because of the innovative construction method. The new three-
Grundriss Erdgeschoss • Ground floor plan storey building which was designed by VON M and erected in the
middle of an inner-city conversion site in the east section of Ludwigs-
burg, is a prime example of the construction turnaround: It is built
entirely according to the cradle-to-cradle principle (meaning the use of
renewable energies as well as complete deconstructability and recy-
clability of the building materials which are used) and can be flexibly
adapted to other usages over the course of its life cycle. Shortly after
the inauguration, a renowned jury praised the timber hybrid building
for its sustainability for good reason: “From the overall idea to the
smallest design detail, the project convinces and we would like to see
more schools like this.” And rightly so: the architecture and learning
concept are a perfect match. Whereas the ground floor, with its multi-
functional canteen, rooms for teaching staff and an open, light-flooded
atrium, serves as an overarching communal and event space, the lear-
ning clusters are located on the two upper floors next to the strikingly
designed wooden staircase. Each unit has five to six classrooms, ancil-

to work in small groups and cater for different learning speeds. The
children also have direct access to the outdoors through perimeter,
pergola-like balconies – with a wire mesh serving as fall protection.
Specialist, day care and inclusion rooms connect the respective clu-
sters. The materials also emphasize the school building’s sustainable
aspirations: a linoleum floor with embedded, textured cocoa shell
pieces, natural, acoustically effective wood-wool ceiling elements and
glazed wooden components for columns, doors and furniture com-
plement the natural basic tone with a rough-sawn exposed-concrete
structure. The coordinated colour concept deliberately focuses on a
gender-neutral character and serves not only as a design element, but
Längsschnitt • Longitudinal section also to provide orientation and successfully create a sense of identity.
