PRIMARY SCHOOL
IN COLOGNE
It took ten years from the tender to completion, but the
wait for the Emanuel School (EMA) was worth it: the five-
form entry primary school with sports hall in Cologne-Ro-
denkirchen offers around 500 pupils a well-thought-out
spatial programme that provides the inclusive community
with countless opportunities for learning, moving around
and recreation with variable communal areas.
T he classrooms, study- and recreation rooms, arranged in three
clusters with open-use movement areas at different room depths,
are complemented by therapy and physiotherapy rooms on the ground
floor as well as theatre-, art and- music rooms, a library and a teaching
kitchen on the first floor. A variety of room qualities and sizes offer
ideal conditions for different uses by the learning community: there
are rooms for learning individually or in groups, for playing, for with-
drawing or for socialising with pupils and teachers. Five learning and
teaching rooms form a cluster together with differentiation, recreation
and relaxation areas, thus offering countless opportunities to spend

for a joint inclusive experience. The pedagogical concept in the elegant
clinker brick building is clearly implemented, which is supported in the
interior by exposed concrete, wooden fixtures and finely coordinated
coloured surfaces. The bright yellow of the inner side stringers of the
staircase clad with wooden slats also covers the outer surface of the
balustrade on the first floor and emphasizes its sculptural, connecting
look. A platform under the first landing serves as a landing and pre-
vents walking under the stairs. The canteen and assembly hall which
also includes a stage merge with the entrance hall to form the commu-
nicative hub of the building. Glass walls visibly integrate the communal
spaces and allow views of each other and the outside area. Adjacent to
these spacious rooms, one wing houses the therapy rooms designed for
children with disabilities. Another wing houses all the administrative
rooms, including the teachers’ offices and meeting rooms. The first of
the four-year clusters is located in the third part of the building. On the
first floor there are three further clusters for three more year groups,
spread across all parts of the building. Centrally integrated learning
landscapes can be used variably, for breaks as well as for extended
teaching and learning units. The bright yellow fixed furniture under the
zinc-sheet-clad atriums is a visual anchor point, a connecting spatial
