KINDERGARTEN
IN HEILBRONN
Creating identity, offering scope for development, pro-
viding adaptable space for interaction and places of re-
treat — buildings for children require great skills as they
have a decisive influence on the development of their
users. The three-group day care centre in Heilbronn is a
sensitively designed learning and living environment
that meets the complex catalogue of requirements.
A tedly guaranteed: By means of stylised gable-front houses, the
quick recognition value from a child’s perspective is undoub-
overall volume of the two-storey new building is reduced to a scale
suitable for young children. However, the striking façade, built in tim-
ber post-and-beam construction, not only makes an immediate im-
pression on the outside — the construction of the dynamic roof struc-
ture is continuously evident inside the building in the form of varied
spatial impressions. Underneath the five roofs, the internal division of
the spaces seems to come about as a matter of course. The functional
and service section in the east is adjoined by an access and foyer buil-

spatial organisation makes it much easier for the sixty or so children
to find their way around. Thanks to the façade, which is glazed on
three sides, there are continuous visual axes with direct reference to
the surroundings. A two-storey loggia in front of the building extends
the play area of the group rooms out into the open, independent of
the weather. Both storeys are connected by a seemingly inserted stair-
case core that dissolves towards the top. The permeable spatial im-
pression across both storeys is reinforced with the help of a generous
skylight located above the staircase. In addition to its main use as a
circulation element, the coat racks and exhibition space are integrated
here. It is expressly encouraged to fill the open shelf structure with
handmade exhibits! Continuous linoleum flooring in warm grey and
solid cross-laminated timber provide an creative and ideal basis in
terms of economy and durability of the highly frequented surfaces.
Acoustically effective perforated wooden ceilings create a positive
spatial experience in combination with all the white glazed walls
around. Carefully coordinated mint-green fixtures are partially com-
plemented by robust felt elements in muted shades. This mono-
chrome, restrained choice of materials accompanies the children
throughout all the areas and literally leaves enough room for the co-
