N iemand weiß, wie lange und warum die über 2.000 Jahre alte Bron-
zestatue des Apoxyomenos am Grund des Mittelmeers lag. 1996
wurde sie zufällig von Hobbytauchern gefunden und drei Jahre später ge-
borgen. Die Fachwelt ist sich einig: Der vor der Küste der Insel Lošinj ent-
deckte griechische Athlet ist ein einmaliger Sensationsfund. Nach Jahren
akribischer Restaurationsarbeit entwarfen ihm die kroatischen Architek-
ten Idis Turato und Saša Randić ein neues Museum. Gemeinsam mit
ihnen entwickelte Zumtobel ein maßgeschneidertes Beleuchtungskon-
zept, das die Geschichte der Statue mithilfe vielfältiger LED-Lichtlösungen
erlebbar macht. Ganz ohne Farben und vor allem ganz ohne Schatten
präsentiert sich der weiße Hauptraum mit Apoxyomenos als geheimnis-
vollem Höhepunkt des Museums. Seine besondere Aura, die die ganze
Aufmerksamkeit auf die 1,92 Meter große Bronzestatue lenkt, basiert we-
sentlich auf einem weißen Boden sowie auf weißen, nahtlos in die Decke

Sea. In 1996, it was found by chance by amateur divers and recovered
three years later. Experts agree: The Greek athlete discovered off the
coast of the Island of Lošinj, Croatia, is a unique and sensational find.
After years of painstaking restoration work, the Croatian architects Idis
Turato and Saša Randić designed a new museum for the sculpture.
Together with the architects, Zumtobel developed a tailor-made
lighting concept that enables the history of the statue to be experi-
enced using a wide range of LED lighting solutions. The white main
room with Apoxyomenos as the museum's mysterious highlight pre-
sents itself without any colours and – above all – without any sha-
dows. Its special aura, which draws all attention to the 1.92-metre
bronze statue, is essentially based on a white floor and white textile
walls that merge seamlessly with the ceiling. In the sense of the de-
materialising effect, an almost bodiless lighting solution with invisible
light sources was to be developed. The exhibition is continued in the
neighbouring cinema, whose colourful interior design evokes associa-
tions with aquatic plants. The impression of an underwater world is
reinforced by LED RGB recessed floor luminaires, which create a dim
underwater atmosphere through flowing colour transitions.
