A lle Altersgruppen sollten etwas von der neuen Bibliothek haben, von Kleinkindern
bis zu den ältesten Mittgliedern der Gemeinschaft. Die Kalker Stadtteilbibliothek
bietet jede Menge gemütliche, leicht individuell gestaltete Räume, die durch zweiseitige
Bücherregale voneinander getrennt werden. Außerdem gibt es noch einen Kinderspiel-
platz, altersgerechtes Mobiliar, eine multilinguale Medienauswahl, WLAN und natürlich
zahlreiche Ecken, in die man sich mit einem Buch gemütlich zurückziehen oder wo man
sich mit Freunden verabreden kann. Es gibt private Studierplätze, Arbeitsplätze und eine
Kaffee-Ecke. Gegenüber dem Arbeitsbereich findet man den Blickfang der Bibliothek:
das „Superregal“, ein großes transparentes Regal-Display an der Hinterseite der Biblio-
thek. Im ersten Obergeschoss wurde eine für das junge Publikum maßgeschneiderte
Landschaft erschaffen, wo die Generation X in unmittelbarer Nähe des Projekts Urban
Screen Digitektur chillen, arbeiten oder sich treffen kann. Große Tische, eine offene At-
mosphäre, dimmbare Beleuchtung, bequemes Vintage-Mobiliar, Teppiche und „Maker-
spaces“, die mehreren Besuchern Platz zum interaktiven Arbeiten bieten, werden mit
rustikalen Holzböden und anderen urigen Elementen kombiniert. Die äußerst infor-
melle Atmosphäre öffnet damit der jüngeren Generation die Tür in eine Zukunft, in der
speziell für sie die Bibliothek ihr altes, muffiges Image weit hinter sich gelassen hat.
A ll age groups were to benefit from the new library, from small children to the ol-
dest members of the community. The Kalk city-district library thus offers all
sorts of cosy, individually designed rooms which are divided by book shelves acces-
sible from both sides. There is furthermore a children’s play corner as well as age-
appropriate furniture, a multi-lingual selection of media, WiFi and, of course, any
number of corners where one can comfortably retreat with a book or arrange to meet
with friends. There are individual study places, workstations and also a coffee cor-
ner. Opposite the work area is the eye-catcher of the library: the “supershelf,” a
large, transparent display shelf at the back of the library. On the first upper level, a
custom-made landscape was designed for the young audience where it can chill,
work or meets others in close proximity the Urban Screen Digitektur project. Large
tables, an open atmosphere, dimmable lighting, comfortable vintage furniture, car-
pets and “makerspaces” for several visitors to work interactively are combined with
rustic wooden floors and other quaint elements. The extremely informal atmosphere
thus opens for the younger generation a door into a future where, specifically for
them, the library has left its old, musty image far behind.
