SCHOOL IN NUREMBERG
The new combined middle and technical secondary
school on the outskirts of Nuremberg is named after com-
poser Johann Pachelbel. Stuttgart-based architects Lede-
rer Ragnarsdóttir Oei were responsible for the design.
The architects designed a strong and identity-generating
building structure for the location, which gives the face-
less suburban agglomeration a lasting new quality.
A lmost 20 years ago, the architectural practice Lederer Ragnars-
dóttir Oei gave the Scharnhauser Park development area on the
outskirts of Stuttgart an identity-creating centre in the form of a school
of the same name. At that time, the architects opted for clearly arranged
outdoor spaces, a differentiated interplay of familiar architectural forms
and iridescent brick facades with coarse masonry joints. The new
building was to give the still young district a bit of historicity. The exper-
iment was successful, the new building was accepted and still plays a
central role in the public life of the Scharnhauser Park estate. So it does
not come as a surprise that the architects again relied on this proven
model when they had to give a new school building located on the
western outskirts of Nuremberg – on a site wedged between industrial
estate, allotment gardens, biotope, railway line, and arterial road - an
identity of its own. Again, the architects created differentiated exterior
spaces enclosed by brick facades: towards the driveway a rather public
square - the architects compare it with a "town hall or market square"
-, at the back an intimate "village green" with two rows of trees and a
spacious playground on the rooftop of the gymnasium that is half
sunken into the ground. When viewed from above, this results in an H-
shaped ground plan figure. The central section accommodates the cen-
tral entrance hall on the ground floor, which extends across all floors
as an oval atrium, as well as the auditorium and two symmetrically
arranged, open staircases. The library, rooms for all-day care and IT are
located on the upper floors. In the northern wing are the specialist
classrooms, while the standard classrooms are located in the southern
building wing. Only natural, durable and repairable building materials
were used for the interior fit-out. The floor of the entrance hall is cov-
ered with dark natural stone. Linoleum was used in the rest of the
building. All doors, fixtures and fittings - such as the seating steps in
front of the auditorium - were made of wood. Thus, the new building
is not only equipped for a long service life, but also has the strength to
sustainably enhance the heterogeneous surrounding area.
