r Was würden Sie Studenten raten, die ebenfalls in London ein Praktikum
absolvieren möchten?
Für die Wohnungssuche ist der September ein geeigneter Monat, da zum Semester-
wechsel viele Zimmer frei werden. Aus eigener Erfahrung würde ich unbe dingt darauf
achten, dass der Weg von der WG ins Büro nicht zu weit ist, da es in einer Stadt wie
London bis zu anderthalb Stunden dauern kann, um von A nach B zu kommen. Reist
man eine oder zwei Wochen vor Arbeitsbeginn nach London an, bleibt noch etwas
Zeit anzukommen, sich einzuleben und Formalitäten zu erledigen – Zeit, um eine
National Insurance Number zu beantragen oder ein Konto zu eröffnen.

r Welche Lieblingsorte haben Sie in London für sich entdeckt?
Einer der faszinierendsten Orte in London ist das Sir John Soane Museum, eine riesige
private Sammlung alter Gemälde und Statuen. Bis unter die Decke gestapelt, sind die
Exponate im ehemaligen Wohnhaus des Sammlers auf ganz besondere Weise aus-
gestellt. Ein weiteres Gebäude, das ich zu lieben gelernt habe, ist der Sitz des RIBA, ein
wunderschönes, beeindruckendes Gebäude aus den 1930er-Jahren für Ausstel lungen
und Veranstaltungen. Das Royal Institute of British Architects ist immer einen Besuch
wert! Dazu gehören auch ein sehr gut ausgestatteter Buchladen und eine Bibliothek in
einem der oberen Stockwerke. Ebenfalls immer lohnenswert ist das Barbican Centre,

immer etwas los, vor allem im Sommer. Diese Vielfältigkeit, endlose Möglichkeiten
und die Lebendigkeit Londons begeistern mich jedes Mal aufs Neue.

M rs Ruf, how easy or how difficult is it at the present time to get an internship
in London? And how did you find the small but fine Fraher Architects office?
It is not easy to get an internship but not impossible either. Many larger offices prefer
interns who already have a bachelor degree in their pockets, they only offer unpaid jobs
or, on principle, do not have an internship programme. There is such a rush for the few
available jobs that there is a danger of easily getting lost in the crowd. Some German
universities have contacts with London offices. In this case, it can be worthwhile
approaching the professors. My professor had worked for some time in London and she
was able to give me many useful hints. I found Fraher Architects in the dezeen internet
blog. From the beginning, the symbiosis of architecture and interior design and the sig-
nificance of furniture for defining rooms appealed to me.

r Unlike many London mega offices, Fraher Architects has a family-like size. Please
describe the office structure and the working method to us?
“Family-like” describes the atmosphere in the office very well. Due to the fact that the

team with currently nine employees is comparably small and that they are all working
in one room, there is a lively exchange of experiences and plans. A very relaxed, dynam-
ic and create atmosphere reigns. This spirit is reflected in the after-work visiting of a pub
on Fridays, in the weekly baking contest or in other activities such as playing softball.
Of course, hierarchies also exist but basically we all help each other. And one notices
that Fraher Architects is a very young office with great potential and lots of plans.

r In which projects were you allowed to participate so far? What were your tasks?
A brief but very fitting description of my activities is: helping wherever help is needed.
This means that my range of tasks is incredibly varied and never gets boring. My two
bosses, Joe and Lizzie, are presently building their house right next to the office. This is
a very good opportunity to witness the progress at the construction site day by day from
the beginning and to get involved in everything. I was permitted to work on all the
rooms and the equipment with Joe and Lizzie, from the draft of the kitchen to the organi -
zation of the electrics to my little very own favourite project on which I am working right
now – manufacturing concrete washbasins. A further project in which I am participating
is a large house in the north of London. This is being renovated top to bottom, extended
and outfitted with furniture. I am enthusiastic about all these projects.
