PLATE SELECTOR AGENCY
IN BARCELONA
The recipe for the office design of this Spanish agen-
cy is relatively simple and furthermore requires only a
few ingredients. Take an open spatial design, a dash of
colour (not too intense!), a select and reduced range of
materials and a touch of stylish elegance. It’s just as in
the case of a delicious dish – it doesn’t take many ingre-
dients, but the few must simply be good.
P late Selector is all about communicating culinary and gastronomic
topics. The focus is on restaurants, bars, hotels, but also shops,
wineries and agricultural businesses. The agency was founded by Alba
Yanez, Khaled Abbas and Juan Navaza in Barcelona in 2013. Since then,
the team has been creating gastronomically oriented content, which is
published on their own website and in social networks – with great suc-
cess. In the meantime, Plate Selector has managed to grow considerably,
which is why it now needed larger office premises. The interior designer
and Barcelona native Isern Serra, who is far from unknown, was commis-
sioned to design the office. The agency has been working with him for
years. It is clear that the kitchen area plays a particularly important role
in this project – after all, it is the hub of an agency team that deals with
culinary delights on a daily basis. The kitchen island is particularly note-
worthy since the delicate work surface rests on a cylindrical leg on one
side and on a rectangular marble block on the other, with a surface that
has been finished in different ways: The front and back sides of the block
are polished smooth, whereas the sides have been left with the visible
quarry edges, creating a visual and haptic contrast. The striking reddish
stone with white marbling, which also plays a major role in the design of
the office desks, was quarried in Alicante. Thanks to this central island,
the kitchen not only becomes a highly functional space, allowing fluid
circulation, but also transforms into a meeting point that encourages
social interaction. Generally speaking, the open-plan office is designed
with restraint. The walls, ceilings and floors are all a monochrome sandy
colour. This is probably why the rooms have something of the character
of a cave about them – an elegant cave, mind you! An interior room
with floor-to-ceiling arched windows serves as a meeting room where
employees can retreat if necessary. Otherwise, work is done together
at two long office desks. A remarkably angular sofa contrasting with the
cylinders of the table yet blending harmoniously into the predominant
colour scheme of the office, is used for short breaks – like an ingredient
