Puls selbst bei höheren Geschwindig keiten synchron im mittleren Frequenz bereich bewe-
gen. Physische Präsenz und Beschleu ni gung fühlt sich anders an, trotz des manuellen
Beschleunigung: 0–100 km/h in 9,9 Sekunden gemäßigten Fahrstil aufzuerlegen scheint. Zwei Tonnen Gewicht wollen schließlich auch
Verbrauch: 5 l/100 km Durchschnitt bewegt und beschleunigt werden, da bleibt einige Power leider auf der Strecke. Die beim
Kick-down erhoffte Freisetzung vielleicht schlummernder Energie tritt jedenfalls nicht in
dem erhofften Maß zutage. Vernunft geht eben vor. Ob daher der Border Collie in dem
Ford-Werbefilm tatsächlich bei dem Querfeldein-Wettrennen gegen den S-Max verliert
und anschließend verdutzt auf den Sieger schaut, bleibt fraglich.
Fazit: Jede Menge Technik für verhältnismäßig wenig Geld
Der Ford S-Max der zweiten Generation hat sich als variabler und sehr geräumiger Multi-
van in unserem alltäglichen Berufs- und Familienleben bewährt. Mit einer ganzen Reihe
von technischen Features werden selbst längere Fahrten für die ganze Familie zu einem
angenehmen und entspannten Reiseerlebnis. Die dynamische Linienführung mit den lang
gezogenen Frontscheinwerfern und den Kühlerkiemen wirken ambitioniert und geben
nach außen ein äußerst kompaktes Erscheinungsbild, was ein Stück weit Understatement
zum üppigen Raum im Innern darstellt. Damit besticht das Fahrzeug vor allem beim
Einsteigen auf den wertvollen zweiten Blick: viel Raum, Sicherheit und jede Menge
Technik für verhältnismäßig wenig Geld.
ore car for your money – was a Ford advertising slogan in 1955! Figuratively, it
is this fundamental maxim we as architects repeatedly come face to face with
when exercising our profession? An optimum of space with the highest possible qual-
ity at a low price and additionally implemented in the shortest possible planning and
construction period? Pursuing this squaring the circle often gives rise to objects, not
only in architecture, which are characterised by the conflicting priorities of rational-
ism, functionalism, cost optimisation and the wish for aesthetic appeal and design.
To come to the point, with the S-Max the Ford brand succeeded in the minivan/family
bus segment to achieve a very good balance of space, functionality and ambitious
design within an economical cost structure.
... a spacious, rational family car
When operating the transponder, the red vehicle answers by flashing its lights, and
so it is immediately evident that one will not feel pure passion beyond 300 HP under-
neath one’s bottom for the next two weeks but a spacious, rational family car, which
can easily transport one’s own children along with half a sports team. Half a sports
team? At first sight, the dimensions of the S-Max seem to be those of a normal mid-
range 5-seater. The streamlined contouring of the car is supported by the long-drawn-
out windscreen and the short front section and suggests that the car does not want
to resemble a conventional box-shaped minivan, where one does not quite know
whether it is moving forwards or reversing. With these mixed feelings one gets into
the S-Max and tries to familiarise oneself with the many technical features, which
partly bring tears to the eyes of a “Vorsprung durch Technik” car holder. A large shin-
ing touch screen, which is already dotted with fingerprints after a few functions, again
and again comes to the fore. It is one of those moments when you suddenly realise
that driving in the future will be completely taken over by computers and so-called
“driving assistants”, and one mutates from a driver to a collision manager of an
almost perfectly working “auto pilot“. The last remnants of control elements in the
modestly designed central console seem to evolutionary regress in favour of more
complex technological controls at the steering wheel and an over-sized touch screen.
Résumé: A lot of technology for relatively little money
The second generation Ford S-Max proved successful as a variable and very spacious
multi-van in our everyday professional and family life. Due to a whole range of tech-
nical features, even longer trips turn into a pleasant and relaxing travel experience for
the whole family. The dynamic contours with the long-drawn-out headlamps and radi-
ator grills look sophisticated and generate a very compact appearance, which actually
is to some extent an understatement against the opulent spaciousness of the interior.
Especially when getting into the car and taking a valuable second look, it impresses
with plenty of room, safety and lots of technology for relatively little money.
