                                                                                    Karl Lagerfeld lived in his flat right on the Seine until his
                                                                                    death in 2019. He loved extravagance but hated the smell
                                                                                    of food, which he preferred to have served by two chefs in
                                                                                    his second residence on Rue des Saints-Pères. His photo
                                                                                    studio was in a third location. When all three maisons
                 4                          2                                       were auctioned off in 2024, Pauline Leprince was given
                                                                                    the chance to redesign the second one.

                                                                                    P  auline  Leprince  presented  her  first  furniture  collection  at  the
                                                               1                       Paris Design Week in 2023, and her aluminium objects not only
                                                                                    impressed the visitors. Her collection also caught the attention of a pro-
                                                                                    spective buyer, who approached the young designer and interior architect
                                                                                    a few months later as the new owner of the former Lagerfeld residence
                                                                                    and everything happened very quickly: “After I had seen the flat, it took

                                                                                    ving the soul of the place while reimagining its potential through sophi-
                                                                                    sticated interventions, playing with the contrasts of light and shadow,
                                                                                    opulence and minimalism. The materials – a trilogy of walnut, brushed
                                                                                    stainless steel and limestone – were also carefully selected to reflect a
                                                                                    subtle timelessness, while the spaces were rearranged to create a flowing
                                                                                    continuum: The ground floor houses the living, dining and bar areas,
                                                                                    whereas the upper floor accommodates the bedrooms, dressing room

                                                                                    and bathroom, and the basement a spa area. Timeless designer pieces
                                                                                    and custom-made creations – such as luminaires, tables, chairs, shelves,
                                                                                    the sofa, the bed and the washbasins – blend to form a complete work of
                                                                                    art that references the fashion designer’s work and creative preferences,
                                                                                    but also bears a very unique signature based on powerful, sculptural
                                                                                    and equally radical elements. “My work is very personal to me,” explains
                                                                                    Pauline Leprince, who actually has her roots in the film industry: “It’s
                                                                                    about my emotions and about creating my own cinematographic lan-
                9                                                                   guage from literary and artistic influences.” She has certainly succeeded
                                                                                    in doing so: the apartment is completely and utterly subject to her own
                                              8                                     script, but Lagerfeld’s visionary spirit always remains the main character.
