LAGERFELD APARTMENT
IN PARIS
Karl Lagerfeld lived in his flat right on the Seine until his
death in 2019. He loved extravagance but hated the smell
of food, which he preferred to have served by two chefs in
his second residence on Rue des Saints-Pères. His photo
studio was in a third location. When all three maisons
4 2 were auctioned off in 2024, Pauline Leprince was given
the chance to redesign the second one.

P auline Leprince presented her first furniture collection at the
1 Paris Design Week in 2023, and her aluminium objects not only
impressed the visitors. Her collection also caught the attention of a pro-
spective buyer, who approached the young designer and interior architect
a few months later as the new owner of the former Lagerfeld residence
and everything happened very quickly: “After I had seen the flat, it took

3 Wohnzimmer • Living room
4 Hauptküche • Main kitchen haus and Memphis design epochs.” In redesigning the 380-square-metre
5 Personalküche • Staff kitchen
6 Esszimmer • Dining Room maisonette, she was primarily concerned with harmoniously blending
7 Bar • Bar heritage and innovation, as well as with a contemporary interpretation
Grundriss Erdgeschoss • Ground floor plan of the rooms and the materials. She placed great emphasis on preser-
ving the soul of the place while reimagining its potential through sophi-
sticated interventions, playing with the contrasts of light and shadow,
opulence and minimalism. The materials – a trilogy of walnut, brushed
stainless steel and limestone – were also carefully selected to reflect a
subtle timelessness, while the spaces were rearranged to create a flowing
continuum: The ground floor houses the living, dining and bar areas,
whereas the upper floor accommodates the bedrooms, dressing room

and bathroom, and the basement a spa area. Timeless designer pieces
and custom-made creations – such as luminaires, tables, chairs, shelves,
the sofa, the bed and the washbasins – blend to form a complete work of
art that references the fashion designer’s work and creative preferences,
but also bears a very unique signature based on powerful, sculptural
and equally radical elements. “My work is very personal to me,” explains
Pauline Leprince, who actually has her roots in the film industry: “It’s
about my emotions and about creating my own cinematographic lan-
9 guage from literary and artistic influences.” She has certainly succeeded
in doing so: the apartment is completely and utterly subject to her own
8 script, but Lagerfeld’s visionary spirit always remains the main character.
