HAUS BLACK FOREST
IN THE BLACK FOREST
A difficult hillside property with an overwhelming
view was the starting position for the design. Lee+Mir
Architekten developed from it and using the footprint
of the preceding building a spectacular single-family
home in the Black Forest. Inside, classic-modern inte-
riors on three levels resulted characterized by high-
quality installations and elaborate light directions.
F Mir – students of Alexander Brenner – have been successfully fo-
Grundriss Untergeschoss (Spa-Ebene) • Basement floor plan (Spa level) or many years already, the Stuttgart architects Patrik Lee and Marc
cussed on high-quality residential buildings and villas in the south-
west. Flat roofs, extensive glass surfaces and brilliant white walls in
combination with highlights of select materials characterize their
works. Their designs are classic-modern in the best sense. They are
dream houses for a clientele which appreciates the contemporary wit-
hout, however, looking for the experiment of the avantgarde. The most
recent building of the duo of architects was completed last year in a
narrow valley of the Black Forest. Here the building, called Haus Black
Forest, sits on a steep hillside property which has been owned by the
Grundriss Erdgeschoss (Gartenebene) • Ground floor plan (Garden level) client family for three generations. The new building is thus already
the third in this place and was designed on the foundation walls of its
two predecessors. The three storeys of the house cling closely to the
existing topography with the result that different levels are visible on
the outside. The main access including the large living- and eating
area is situated on the top level and accessed from the street. The
level below this contains the bedrooms and opens to the upper gar-
den whereas the basement floor has a spacious spa area and is ex-
panded towards the valley side with an additional garden level. The
polygon-shaped layouts of the two upper floors correspond to the vir-
tual contour lines of the building site. Lee and Mir met the challenging
Grundriss Obergeschoss (Straßenebene) • Upper floor plan (Street level) situation of the hillside property with numerous well thought-out so-
lutions: thus, for instance, a narrow, stepped and partly covered inner
yard extends between the street and the entrance area. It cleverly me-
diates between the different levels, allows first views into the house
and is a soft transition from the public to the private zone in the
house. On the inside, skylights, glass floors and open areas direct na-
tural light into the rooms situated towards the slope. Numerous stairs
inside as well as outside furthermore link the various levels of the
house and the property. The interiors are multiply structured with ele-
