HOLIDAY HOME
NEAR EPSE
Derelict, uncovered, revived: Where some saw just two
small, dilapidated holiday homes in the Achterhoek
region, the “back corner” of the Netherlands, with a
few targeted interventions and an eye for the atmo-
sphere, the architects Eek en Dekkers designed a fami-
ly retreat which respects the existing fabric and, with

was bereits da ist, erstellt und nutzen die
vorhandenen Möglichkeiten.“ S mall villages with country estates, castles, creek valleys and exten-
sive woodlands make the Achterhoek region a true paradise for
Eek en Dekkers hikers and cyclists. In the middle of woodland near Epse, under matu-
re trees, a one-storey, elongated building of old exposed brickwork
merges into the scenery. Only at the second glance does it become visi-
ble that this is a modernized, contemporary holiday cottage. Eek en
Dekkers had set themselves the task to react to the existing situations
with respect, to analyse what was there as to its potential and to
update it with targeted interventions. Near Epse, they found two old
holiday cottages with a garage between them. Although the buildings
were in a poor state of repair, they were ideally oriented towards the
sun on the rather overgrown lot. In order to make the best possible use
of the light situations when situating the rooms, the three building
volumes were connected to form an elongated structure with little
width and attention was paid to the consistent north-south orientation
of the functions. While the kitchen-, dining- and living areas open to
Querschnitt • Transversal section the sunny garden along the whole length, the bedrooms and bath-
rooms of the family are found along the shady back side of the ensem-
ble. A clever feature by the architects, however, still made it possible
to design comfortable, pleasant rooms there. They raised the roof con-
struction on one side and folded it up to form a butterfly roof. The con-
tinuous band of windows thus produced gives additional height and
lets light into the building. Also bright and clear is the design vocabu-
lary of the interior. Minimalist, simple cabinet installations of birch ply-
wood leave the narrow layout free and, together with the jointless,
grey-painted concrete floor create an open, spacious impression.
Specifically designed mobile individual pieces of furniture, such as the
kitchen counter on castors, characterize the large room, add colour
accent and make a flexible use possible. When the weather is good,
all the activities can be extended into the garden with wide hinged
doors and life in nature can be enjoyed. This is how true recreation is
