W ährend sich die Häuser im Zentrum Stuttgarts dicht an dicht reihen und zahlrei-
che Baustellen wegen Stuttgart 21 so manchen Autofahrer zur Weiß glut bringen,
herrscht im Stuttgarter Osten noch eine entspanntere Atmosphäre. Zu diesem Stadt gebiet
zählt auch das mittelalterlich geprägte Gablenberg mit seiner lockeren Bebauung.
Inmitten von Streu obst wiesen und Schup pen verwirklichte hier eine fünfköpfige Familie
ihren Traum vom Eigenheim – mit weitem Blick über die Stadt. Dabei fügt sich das drei-
geschossige Haus mit Holz- und Kellenwurfputzfassade sowie Biber schwanz dach -
deckung, die der örtlichen bäuerlichen Architektur entlehnt sind, harmonisch in die Um -
gebung ein. Ursprünglich stand auf dem steilen Hanggrundstück ein Gebäude aus der
Nachkriegszeit, aus baurechtlichen Gründen musste es miteinbezogen werden. Das orts-
ansässige Planungsbüro lohrmannarchitekt beließ den Sockel und entwarf die neue
zweigeschossige Holzständerkonstruktion. Trotz des flächenmäßig beschränkten Wohn -
raums mit 147 Quadratmetern für fünf Personen schufen die Architekten Groß zü gig keit
durch offene Strukturen, vertikale Sichtbezüge und weite Aus blicke. Sicht beton und
Tannenholz bestimmen die Materialität innen und in Kombination mit handgeschmiede-
ten Hand läufen charakterisiert das Haus eine bodenständige Anmutung. Ein beson derer
Bereich war der Herzens wunsch der Bauherren: ein Altan als überdachter Aus blicks ort.

W hereas the houses in the centre of Stuttgart are lined up side by side and numer-
ous construction sites due to Stuttgart 21 infuriate many a driver, in the east of
Stuttgart there is still a more relaxed atmosphere. Also part of this urban area is the
largely medieval district of Gablenberg with its low-density development. In the middle
of orchards and sheds, this is where a family of five made the dream of their home come
true – with a sweeping view of the city. Yet the three-level house with a façade of timber
and rough-cast plaster as well as plain-tile roof covering modelled on the local rural
architecture fits harmoniously into the surroundings. A building from the post-war peri-
od was originally located on the steep sloping property and had to be integrated for rea-
sons of construction law. The local lohrmannarchitekt planning office conserved the
base and designed a new two-level timber-frame construction on top of it. Despite the
spatially rather restricted living area of 147 square metres for five persons, the architects
created spaciousness with open structures, vertical visual references and sweeping
views. Exposed concrete and fir wood are the dominant materials inside and, with
hand-forged banisters, the house has a down-to-earth appearance. A very special fea-
ture was the heart’s desire of the clients: a balcony as a covered lookout point.
