Das ungewöhnliche Einkaufszen-
trum Tarzana beruht auf einer zu-
fälligen Begegnung zwischen dem
Designer Lee Oaks und einem Ca-
dillac von 1970. Oaks übersetzte
die Scheinwerfer als Neonkreise
und den Kühlergrill als ein Gitter
aus Glasfenstern.
The unlikely Tarzana strip mall
began as a chance encounter bet-
ween designer Lee Oaks and a
1970 Cadillac. He translated the
head lights as a neon circles and
the grill is a grid of glass windows.

& Ass. entwarf dieses Parabolbe-
tondach eigentlich für den inter-
nationalen Flughafen von Los An-
geles. Stattdessen wurde es zu
einem Tankstellendach der Union
76 Gas Station und „fliegt“ seit
1965 über Beverly Hills. Darunter
montierte Leuchtstoffröhren und
ein Fries aus roten Quadraten un-
terstreichen die UFO-Stimmung.

lic concrete roof for the Los Ange-
les international airport. Instead it
became a gas station canopy and
took flight over Beverly Hills in
1965. Flourescent tubes mounted
underneath and a frieze of red
squares around the edge unders-
core the swooping UFO vibe.

Für den 1958 erbauten Diner
Pann´s Coffee Shop entwarfen
Louis Armet, Eldon Davis und
Helen Fong ursprünglich ein ge-
wölbtes Schildkröten-Dach. Heute
sind noch die animierte Leuchtre-
klame, tropische Gemälde, Terraz-
zoböden, Glasfenster und Stein-
mauern erhalten. Das Gebäude,
das häufig als Filmkulisse dient,
erhielt 1993 den Conservancy Pre-
servation Award. •
Original family owners lovingly
maintain this space-age 1958
diner with a „tortoise shell“ roof
by Louis Armet, Eldon Davis and
Helen Fong. Classic Googie featu-
res include the animated neon
sign, tropical paintings, terrazzo
floors, plate-glass windows and
stone walls. Frequently used in
films, the building received a 1993
Conservancy Preservation Award
following restoration.
