E legante Häuser und Gärten, Palmen, edle Boutiquen und Hotels... Beverly Hills, im
Süden Kaliforniens, ist der Inbegriff von Luxus und Wohlstand, der zementierte
Status quo des 21. Jahrhunderts. Unweit des Samuel Goldwyn Theatre, wo jährlich die
Oscars verliehen werden, befindet sich die Gallery 19C. Ein Besuch gleicht einer Zeitreise,
denn die Kunstgalerie ist auf Gemälde des 19. Jahrhunderts spezialisiert. Daher der Name
19C – 19th Century. Beeindruckende Originale aus dem Neoklassizismus, der Romantik,
dem Impressionismus oder Naturalismus werden hier präsentiert. Markant sind die kas-
settenartigen Wandvertäfelungen, die den Wohnräumen des europäischen Adels und
Großbürgertums im Louis-Seize-Stil entlehnt sind. Diese dienten bereits Stanley Kubrick
als Vorlage für die Schlafzimmerszene seines Kultfilms „Odyssee im Weltraum“. Arshia
Architects aus Los Angeles berufen sich auf eben jenes anachronistische Szenario des
Science-Fiction-Films. In der Galerie wirkt ein jedes der CNC-gefrästen MDF-Paneele wie
ein zweiter plastischer Rahmen, der die golden gerahmten Meisterwerke – einzeln oder
zu mehreren – verstärkt zur Geltung bringt. Klassisch-modernes Mobiliar sowie wenige,
dynamisch geformte Elemente – Tresen, Schaufensterdisplay und diffuse Lichtobjekte –
verbinden die Kunst des 19. Jahrhunderts mit der Gegenwart, während sich die schwarze
Decke, analog zum Universum, scheinbar grenzenlos in Raum und Zeit ausdehnt...

E legant houses and gardens, palm trees, classy boutiques and hotels... Beverly
Hills in southern California is the epitome of luxury and affluence, the cemented
status quo of the 21st century. Not far from the Samual Goldwyn Theatre, where the
Oscars are awarded every year, is Gallery 19C. A visit is like travelling back in time,
as the art gallery specialises in 19th century paintings. Hence the name 19C — 19th
century. Impressive original paintings from neoclassicism, romanticism, impressio-
nism or naturalism are on display here. The coffered wall panelling, borrowed from
the living rooms of the European aristocracy and upper middle classes in the Louis
Seize style, is striking. Stanley Kubrick used these as a model for the bedroom scene
in his cult film A Space Odyssey. Arshia Architects from Los Angeles refer to precisely
this anachronistic scenario of the science fiction film. In the gallery, each of the CNC-
milled MDF panels acts as a second plastic frame, enhancing the effect of the ma-
sterpieces in golden frames — individually or in groups. Classical-modern furniture
and a few dynamically shaped elements — counters, window display and diffuse light
objects — connect the art of the 19th century with the present, while the black ceiling,
analogous to the universe, seems to expand limitlessly in space and time...
