HAIRDRESSER
IN BRAGA
Going shopping after a visit to the hairdresser and then
— with a new hair style — listening to excellent jazz
music while having a drink, that sounds like a perfect
day in the city. In Braga, Portugal, all this is possible in
an intimate atmosphere and under one roof. Local ar-
chitect Nuno Capa has created the perfect setting for
this: Curtain up for this place of numerous possibilities.
B raga is the Portugal's religious centre and is essentially known
for its baroque sacred buildings, lush gardens and archaeologi-
cal sites. However, the small city in the north of the country also has
a young and much vibrant life. In this environment, Maison 826 ope-
ned at the beginning of the year as a hair salon, jazz club, gallery and

over 30 years and a passionate musician for even longer. In his new
multifunctional premises, he combines both. The venue is located on
the ground floor of a 1970s residential building. During the gutting of
the building, layer after layer of previous uses were removed before
the bare concrete structure was finally exposed. Starting from this
basic structure, architect Nuno Ferreira Capa used the 250-square-
metre space, distributed over four split levels, to create a sophistica-
ted room programme. Fragments of the past now coexist alongside
the newly added elements. The entrance is on level two, where a woo-
den counter seems to float in the room. Here, customers and guests
alike are welcomed and served drinks. There is a choice of going
down to the introverted basement, where concerts, theatre perfor-
mances and vernissages take place, or up a flight of stairs to the hair-
dresser's and one level further up to the boutique. Concrete slabs on
the floor, smoothly rendered walls, sprayed cellulose insulation on

the functions. Here and there, surfaces left untreated refer to the hi-
story of the place. The curtains, hanging from the ceiling on filigree
metal rails painted black, enclose every room. Depending on the oc-
casion, new sequences are always created, sometimes flooded with
daylight, sometimes connected and at other times as self-contained
spaces. In addition, custom-made furniture and fixtures meet the re-
quirements of the different uses and yet remain flexible. For example,
the five-metre-long wooden table only turns out to be a dressing table
at second glance and can be easily transformed into a display unit in
