D emokratie verstehen und erleben, das ist das Ziel des Besucherzentrums des
Österreichischen Parlaments: Nach der Sanierung des Parlamentsgebäudes (1874
von Architekt Theophil Hansen) durch die Architekten Jabornegg & Pálffy entwickelte
das Atelier Brückner in drei zentral im Gebäude gelegenen Räumen das sogenannte
Demokratikum. Bei freiem Eintritt will das Zentrum, um Politik nahbar und verständ-
lich zu machen, nicht nur über die Geschichte der Demokratie in Österreich aufklären,
sondern auch transparent aufzeigen, wie das Parlament, die Staatsform und das Par-
lamentsgebäude selbst funktionieren. Mit einem besonderen Augenmerk auf bauliche
und inhaltliche Barrierefreiheit finden sich auf 1500 Quadratmetern interaktive und
taktile Stationen sowie Hörtexte, die den Anspruch haben, für alle Altersgruppen und
Bildungsstufen geeignet zu sein. Die Räumlichkeiten erhielten zudem auch wegen ihrer
Fensterlosigkeit ein umfangreiches Beleuchtungskonzept und wurden schnörkellos-
funktional mit Hell-Dunkel-Kontrasten ausgestaltet. Interessierte können sich an die-
sem Ort unter anderem über tagesaktuelle Themen informieren und abstimmen, ob sie
mit bereits gefassten Beschlüssen zu gesellschaftlich relevante Themen wie Sterbehilfe

U nderstanding and experiencing democracy is the goal of the visitors centre of the
Austrian Parliament: After the renovation of the parliament building (designed
in 1874 by architect Theophil Hansen) according to plans by architects Jabornegg
& Pálffy, Atelier Brückner developed the so-called Demokratikum in three rooms
which are centrally located in the building. With free admission, the centre aims to
make politics accessible and understandable, not only by explaining the history of
democracy in Austria, but also by transparently showing how parliament, the form
of government and the parliament building itself function. With special attention to
structural and content-related accessibility, the 1,500 square metres of interactive
and tactile stations as well as audio texts claim to be suitable for all age groups and
all possible levels of education. Since they are completely lacking in windows, the
rooms were also given an extensive lighting concept and were furthermore designed
to be functional and straightforward with contrasts of light and dark. Interested par-
ties can inform themselves about current topics and vote on whether they agree with
decisions that have already been taken on socially relevant issues such as eutha-
