L ivemusik, Zirkusvorstellungen, Konferenzen und Ausstellungen rahmen den Ki-
nobesuch in der Sala Equis in Madrid ein. Mit einem lebendigen Mix von Funk-
tionen entstand in einem ehemaligen Erotikkino ein cineastisches Kleinod als kul-
tureller Hotspot. Das geschichtsträchtige Gebäude wurde 1913 als Redaktionsbüro
der Lokalzeitung „El Imparcial“ errichtet. Nach der Schließung im Jahr 1933 ent-
stand hier das Kino Duque de Alba, das seit den 1980er-Jahren Filme ohne Alters-
freigabe zeigte. Nach der Schließung im Jahr 2015 hauchte die Initiative La Cultural
Contemporánea der Sala Equis neues Leben ein. Zunächst gestaltete sie Teile des
Gebäudes als Restaurant, Kunstgalerie wie auch Buch- und Designladen um. Als
Highlight verwandelte Plantea Estudio die zentrale Galerie mit einem Glasdach in
einen multifunktionalen, innenräumlichen Marktplatz. Sonnenliegen, industrielle
Materialien und historische Wandoberflächen charakterisieren diesen wandelbaren
Ort, der mit einer Bar und Projektionsleinwand für viele spontane Veranstaltungen
genutzt wird. Im Gegensatz dazu bestechen der intime Kinosaal und die Cocktailbar
mit einem hochwertigen Innenausbau mit opulentem Samt und roten Leuchten. In
kontrastreichen Räumen mit zeitgemäßen Nutzungen interpretiert Plantea das Kino
neu und bewahrt in vielen Details die bewegte Geschichte des Ortes. bs

L ive music, circus performances, conferences and exhibitions accompany the
visit to the Sala Equis cinema in Madrid. With a lively mix of functions, a cinea-
stic gem was created as a cultural hotspot in a cinema formerly screening erotic
films. The building, steeped in history, was constructed in 1913 as the editorial office
building of the local newspaper El Imparcial. After its closure in 1933, the Duque de
Alba cinema was established here, which had been showing films without an age
rating since the 1980s. After its closure in 2015, the La Cultural Contemporánea in-

characterise this changeable location, which with a bar and a projection screen is
used for many spontaneous events. In contrast to this, the intimate cinema hall and
the cocktail bar are impressive with their high-quality interior fittings with opulent
velvet and red lights. Plantea reinterprets the cinema in rooms rich in contrasts with
contemporary uses and preserves the eventful history of the place in many details.
