via this cycle track, with its vibrant red colour winding its way through the building
in the form of a figure-eight, gradually ascending to the upper floors and visually
connecting the different levels. The emergence from the ground, or rather the disap-
pearance of the bike path into the ground, creates entirely new spatial forms, gene-
rating a distinctive and dynamic effect. This dynamism is further enlivened by the
act of cycling and the resulting individual movements, creating an inspiring spectacle
that replaces the old image of rigid shopping streets. Both conceptually and in terms
of spatial design, the urban bike path serves as the central element. The curated and
fully branded mix of offerings on all levels of the former shopping mall is aligned
with this narrative. It appeals to different target groups and ensures constantly new
journeys of discovery through constant change. In addition to bicycle workshops, the
offers for visitors to bikebase will also include an outdoor store, kindergarten, exhi-
bitions, a health area, catering facilities, customer centre, public office and grocery
stores. Previously, the car parking levels occupied nearly half of the building’s space.
They are replaced by a green park area, with two new building sections emerging
from the shape of the cycle path, accommodating student housing at their centre. A
descending track running around the exterior façade of the shopping centre comple-
tes the visitor experience. Bikebase acts as a catalyst and beacon for the bike-friendly
city of Essen, guiding the city towards a climate-friendly and sustainable future. For
the purpose of presentation and to convey the spatial impact, a section of the bike
path was constructed at a 1:1 scale. In this form of staging, the object becomes a
“monument of the future”. As part of exhibitions or in public spaces, it can serve
as a source of information and inspiration on topics such as urban development,
abandoned property or innovative retail concepts.

                                                                                                                          AIT 9.2023 • 043
