men zu einem alleinstehenden Baukörper. Die beiden Bereiche werden durch die
Umkleiden miteinander verbunden. Der Spa-Bereich verfügt über eine Sauna und
zwei Massageräume. Der Fitnessbereich bietet die Möglichkeit Sport zu treiben. Er-
gänzend dazu sind ein Volleyballfeld und ein Pool im Außenbereich für die Gäste
vorhanden. Die einzelnen Baukörper sollen aus Naturstein errichtet werden. Gewon-
nen wird dieser Naturstein aus dem nahegelegenen Steinbruch Agrepor. Lediglich
wenige Kilometer vom Weingut entfernt und mit dem Auto innerhalb von rund 20
Minuten erreichbar, ist für den Transport des Materials zur Destination eine kurze
Anfahrtsstrecke garantiert. Da Portugal der größte Korkproduzent der Welt ist, eignet
sich das Material hervorragend zur Dämmung der einzelnen Baukörper. Außerdem
passt es bestens zur Thematik Weinhotel. Ein weiterer Vorteil der lokalen Ressource
ist der Brandschutz, da Kork nicht brennbar ist. Während der Planung des Weinho-
tels lag der Fokus immer auf dem rücksichtsvollen Umgang mit dem Bestand. Ent-
sprechend zurückhaltend ergänzt das Weinhotel die bereits bestehenden Bauten des
Weingut, sodass diese weiterhin im Vordergrund stehen.
M y bachelor thesis at the MSA, the Münster School of Architecture is about a
hotel in Portugal for the Quinta do Monte d’Oiro winery near Lisbon. In the
international competition, the project received the BB Student Award. The Quinta do
Monte d’Oiro – the so-called golden mountain – is a 42-hectare vineyard in Portugal
whose history of wine production dates back to the 17 century. The current brand

has been producing organic Syrahs, Viogniers and Petit Verdots since the 1990s. For
the Monte d’Oiro Wine Hotel competition, participants were asked to submit designs
for a hotel as an extension of the current winery complex. The hotel should take full
advantage of the beautiful views and landscape of the vineyard and offer a range of
additional facilities to guarantee visitors an unforgettable stay. The name “Enxame
na encosta”, which means “swarm on the slope” in Portuguese, describes the con-
cept of the design.

The wine hotel will be divided into its individual functions and arranged like a
“swarm of buildings” on the slope. The individual building blocks are oriented to
the parallel system of order of the existing buildings as well as to the topography.
The flats are enclosed by the other structures – the restaurant, the conference room,
the spa- and fitness area and the event area. The reception area is connected to the
existing building by a long wall. Through a large, window-like opening in this wall,
upon arrival the guests have a fascinating view of the vineyards. The individual smal-
ler hotel rooms measure about 30 square metres. They are kept minimalist so that
they resemble a kind of “tiny house”. The front glazing with a terrace door serves as
a source of daylight but also as an entrance. The suites are each the size of two in-
dividual tiny houses placed end to end, are more generously proportioned and have
their own kitchen. The newly designed restaurant is connected to the wine tasting
room via a staircase. An open kitchen and seating for 47 guests are also included in
the design concept. An open staircase connects to the terrace with further seating
and a view of the vineyards. The conference room offers space for groups of different
sizes. In addition to the meeting rooms, there are also two work areas and a kitche-
nette. The façade of the building is kept closed for the most part so that discussions
can take place in a concentrated and focused manner. There is a wall surface for pro-
jections. Only the walls that offer views of the vineyards are opened up with floor-
to-ceiling window sections. The reception serves to welcome arriving guests but also
as a bar for the terrace. The winery’s seasonal wines are also displayed in niches in
the rear wall, so that the reception also functions as a wine shop. The spa- and fit-
ness area join together to form a stand-alone structure. The two areas are connected
by the changing rooms. The spa area has a sauna and two massage rooms. The fit-
ness area offers the possibility to work out and there is a volleyball court and a pool.
The individual buildings are to be constructed of natural stone. This will be extracted
from the nearby Agrepor quarry reducing transportation routes. As Portugal is the
largest producer of cork in the world, the material is ideally suited for insulation. It
also fits in perfectly with the wine-hotel theme. Another advantage of the local re-
source is fire protection, as cork is not flammable. During the planning of the wine
hotel, the focus was always on a respectful treatment of the existing buildings.
