T he existence of Bielefeld is testified not only by chocolate pudding and frozen
pizza, but also by renowned textile producers and excellent cultural institutions.
For many centuries, Bielefeld was the most important centre of the textile industry and
one of the largest mechanical engineering locations in Germany. The historical pro-
duction sites have largely been preserved in the city centre and are now used in diffe-
rent ways. Bielefeld also wants to become Germany's new start-up Mecca. Let us enjoy
a weekend in my hometown. Unendliche Möglichkeiten.

Saturday: Museums and the Old Town

                r 10 a.m. – The medieval Sparrenberg Castle (1), the city's landmark, has only been www.project-floors.com
preserved in fragments, but they are as impressive as the view across the city. A new
visitor and information centre by Max Dudler Architekten made of rammed clay was
added in 2014. On the nearby Johannisberg, Dudler designed two other clay pavilions
in 2015. The Information Point (2) of the Johannisberg Park Landscape is part of a gui-
dance system in the extensive garden and park grounds, which were carefully restored
by the landscape architects L-A-E from Bielefeld. A building at the foot of the castle re-
motely recalls Henry van de Velde's Arts and Crafts School in Weimar. The Bielefeld
Craftsmen and Arts School was founded in 1913 in a reformist spirit according to de-
signs by Friedrich Schultz, the city's head of the municipal building control office at the
time. It now accommodates the music and art school (3) and Café Muku.
r Noon – More art can be seen in one of Germany's most beautiful art galleries, Kunst-
halle Bielefeld (4) by the first Pritzker Prize winner, Philipp Johnson. It is the only buil-
ding he constructed in Europe. The red sandstone cube is stunning, the changing ex-
hibitions and the collection are outstanding. An expansion desired right from the start
is long overdue. A design recently developed by Sou Fujimoto is in the drawer. His
Final Wooden House can be seen in the Kunsthalle's sculpture park alongside works
by Rodin, Rückriem, and Serra. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary in 2018, the
installation “Bus Shelter XII - Shattered Glass / The Confessions of Philip Johnson” by
American artist Dennis Adams was made possible by the special commitment of the
unfortunately retiring director Friedrich Meschede. A small art quarter has developed
at the southeastern medieval ring road in recent years. Kunstforum Hermann Stenner
                (5) was opened in 2018 in an extension to the classicist Villa Weber, occupied by the
