Brasília liegt auf einem Plateau in 1172 Metern Höhe zwischen zwei Flüssen, die zum Amazonas und Rio de la Plata fließen. • Brasília is located at 1172 meters between two rivers that flow to the Amazon and Rio de la Plata.

Brasília wurde 1960 als Brasiliens neue Hauptstadt eingeweiht. Von
Lúcio Costa am Reißbrett entworfen, erinnert ihr „Plano Piloto“ an ein
Flugzeug. Den Rumpf bildet die Eixo Monumental. Im „Cockpit“ liegt
der Praça dos Três Poderes, benannt nach den drei Regierungsgewal-
ten, von denen er umgeben ist. Diese, wie fast alle anderen Schlüs-
selbauten Brasílias, entwarf Oscar Niemeyer. Mit seiner skulpturalen
Architektur prägte er das Bild des modernen Brasiliens. Bis heute zie-
hen seine Entwürfe BesucherInnen aus aller Welt in ihren Bann.

Brasília was inaugurated as Brazil’s new capital in 1960. Desi-
gned by Lúcio Costa, its so-called Plano Piloto is reminiscent of an
aeroplane. The fuselage is formed by the Eixo Monumental. In the
“cockpit” is the Praça dos Três Poderes, named after the three bran-
ches of government that surround it. Oscar Niemeyer designed this Fotos: Christian Schaulin, Waldshut-Tiengen
and almost all of Brasília’s other key buildings. With his sculptural
architecture, he shaped the image of modern Brazil. To this day, his
designs continue to fascinate visitors from all over the world.
