A ufgrund seines „einprägsam-leichten Fassadenbildes“ sowie seiner „intelligenten
Grundriss-Disposition“ – so der BDA-Jurytext – hatte das Landratsamt Starnberg von
Auer Weber bereits 1989 den Deutschen Architekturpreis erhalten und galt schon damals
„als architektonischer Ausdruck demokratischen Bauens“. Seit 1987 ist die japanisch an-
mutende Anlage des Landratsamtes eine Landmarke und Bereicherung des Stadtbildes
von Starnberg. Allerdings war seitdem die Anzahl der MitarbeiterInnen stark gestiegen
und eine Erweiterung notwendig geworden. Neben Besprechungs- und Sozialräumen
galt es, 160 neue Arbeitsplätze unterzubringen, die sich sowohl funktional wie architek-
tonisch an das bereits Vorhandene anschließen sollten – so lautete die Vorgabe. Das Er-
weiterungskonzept ließ also wenig Spielraum für Neues, sowohl in seiner äußeren als
auch inneren Gestalt sollte der Anbau weitestgehend dem Bestand gleichen und keinen
Bruch zwischen Bestehendem und Zugefügtem entstehen lassen; MitarbeiterInnen und
BesucherInnen das Gefühl haben, sich in einem Haus „aus einem Guss“ zu bewegen.
Die Herausforderung bestand sicherlich darin, die 35 Jahre alte Konstruktion, die Mate-
rialien und Details ins Heute zu übertragen. Und das ist offensichtlich gelungen, ebenso
wie die Integration gestiegener baulicher und energetischer Forderungen und die Wah-
rung des vertrauten Gesamtbildes: beispielhaftes Weiterbauen im wahrsten Wortsinn!

D ue to its “memorably light façade impression” and its “intelligent floor plan dispo-
sition” – stated the BDA jury text – the Starnberg District Office by Auer Weber had
received the 1989 German Architecture Prize and was considered “an architectural ex-
pression of democratic building” even then. Since 1987, the Japanese-style building has
been a landmark and an enrichment of the townscape of Starnberg. Since then, howe-
ver, the number of staff had risen significantly and an extension had become necessary.
In addition to meeting and social rooms, 160 new workplaces had to be accommoda-
ted, which were to be related both functionally and architecturally to the existing pre-
mises – such was the brief. Therefore, the extension concept left little room for new
ideas; both in its exterior and interior design, the extension was to resemble the existing
building as much as possible and not create a break between the existing and the
added; staff and visitors were to have the feeling that they were moving in a “seamless”
building. The challenge was certainly to bring the 35-year-old construction, the materials
and details into the present. And this has obviously been achieved, as has the integra-
tion of increased structural and energy requirements and the preservation of the fami-
liar overall appearance: exemplary further construction in the truest sense of the word!
