EGELSEE INDOOR POOL
IN KREUZLINGEN
The Egelsee leisure pool, built in 1975, is located in the
south of the town of Kreuzlingen, between a school and
a residential area. It is currently undergoing a general
renovation. It is also being upgraded by the addition of
a sports pool. The new swimming hall is integrated into
the overall complex and is at the same time separate
enough to meet the different needs of users.
O riginally, the Egelsee thermal bath used to be purely a leisure pool.
Now, as part of the extensive renovation- and expansion measu-
res, it is being developed into a sports pool. Together with the existing

sports swimming pool and a flat connecting structure – succeed in for-
ming a functional and harmonious ensemble. The latter is mainly due
to a façade concept that treats the old and the new as distinct stages
but, nevertheless, allows them to attractively grow together visually. As
part of the energetic renovation, the façade of the existing swimming
hall is now clad with fibre-cement panels. The new building – consisting
of an exposed-concrete base and a wooden-element construction rising
from it – is wrapped in a striking titanium-zinc façade. A large glass front
offers a view of the lower-lying interior: since the terrain slopes down
towards the south, parts of the premises are located underground – the
changing area and the 25 by 33-metre sports pool. A lateral grandstand
offers space for around 200 people during competitions and is acces-
sible from both the entrance- and the pool levels. In terms of design,
Gähler Flühler Fankhauser Architekten have developed the theme of
the exterior façade further inside the swimming hall. Exposed-concrete
walls with vertical board planking form a “hard tub” at pool level as it
were. On the upper floor, on the other hand, where splashing water is

the wooden ceiling, it forms a soft counterpart that closes off the day-
light-flooded hall space at the top. The material concept also influenced
the choice of windows: metal frames were chosen for the ground-level
sections of the building, whereas wood/metal windows were used on
the upper floor of the swimming hall. The wellness area and the existing
leisure pool can be accessed via the adjoining single-storey connecting
building. The resulting acoustic separation of the two areas with their
different atmospheres –hustle and bustle connected with families on the
one hand, concentrated training on the other – will certainly be appre-
