HQ GIGI STUDIOS
IN BARCELONA
Breaking away from conventional office layouts and
designing an open, flowing floor plan that encourages
creativity and collaboration – that was the declared aim
of Isern Serra, who designed the company headquarters
near Barcelona for eyewear manufacturer GIGI Studios.
The new headquarters not only reflect the brand values,
but also offer sufficient space for further developments ...
T he project aims to experiment with the boundaries of the office and
seek a new form that corresponds to the idea of domus and muse-
um. It is about finding the essence of the space and filling it with only
the purest components to give it value in itself,” Isern Serra describes the
design concept: “In short, the aim is to create a brand space in which
every detail radiates the care and sensitivity that GIGI Studios also dedi-
cates to its products.” The result is a 950-square-metre work space that
meanders between a calm and warm atmosphere, contemporary ele-
gance and staged scenes while, at the same time, spatializing the brand’s
sophisticated aesthetic, which above all stands for craftsmanship and
excellence, combines tradition and innovation and merges artistic
excursus with attention to detail. Accordingly, custom-made sculptural
elements now define the space, natural light characterizes the surfaces
and informal and formal areas alternate in a choreographed sequence of
rooms: While the long sides of the floor plan are open-plan, the closed
rooms are grouped together on the narrow sides. The kitchen and exhibi-
tion space are located at one end, with individual offices, meeting rooms
and the customer area at the other. In between, the open spaces are
arranged around the access core, which enables circulation throughout
the space and thus new synergies. The central eye-catchers here are the
two expansive seating areas, which can be used in a variety of ways:
for impromptu meetings and brainstorming sessions, for concentrated
working, but also for conversations in a more private atmosphere. In con-
trast, the kitchen with its custom-built concrete islands and five-metre-
long communal tables serves as a place for informal encounters. It is no
coincidence that it is directly adjacent to the showroom since the two
rooms complement each other perfectly for larger events or dinners with
customers. The spacious exhibition area is also dominated by two room
sculptures: rough boulders support the concrete slabs of the presentation
tables and once again emphasize the character of the brand – crafts-
manship and art are combined in perfect harmony and the sculptural
