M ehr als 20 Jahre lang existierte im Zentrum der japanischen Hauptstadt der
beliebte Kamera-Shop Irumando. Senbunnoichi oblag die Aufgabe, das einstige
Traditionsgeschäft in ein Café zu verwandeln. Der Entwurf der Architektengruppe ist eine
Hommage an die Vergangenheit und eine Gegeninitiative zum Phänomen des Ver-
schwindens im schnelllebigen Tokio. Ihr Konzept? – Das Café als „Camera Obscura“. We-
nige kleine runde Öffnungen in der Fassade werfen bei Lichteinfall auf den Kopf gestellte
Bilder auf die gegenüberliegende Wand. Diese erzeugen im schwach beleuchteten, spi-
rituell-ruhigen Innenraum immer wieder neue abstrakte, vergängliche Bilder der an sich
ausgeblendeten Außenwelt. Poesie in Form von Coffeeshop-Kultur! wa
F or more than twenty years, the popular camera shop Irumando existed in the
centre of the Japanese capital city. Senbunnoichi was given the task of transfor-
ming the former shop with a long tradition into a café. The design developed by the
group of architects is a homage to the past and a counter-initiative to the phenome-
non of disappearance in fast-paced Tokyo. Their concept? The café as a “camera ob-
scura”. A few small round openings in the façade cast upside-down images onto the
opposite wall when the light hits them. In the dimly lit, spiritually calm interior,
these constantly create new abstract, ephemeral images of the outside world, which
is actually blanked out. Poetry in the form of coffee shop culture!
