                                                                              Massimo Colonna was born in 1986 in Scandiano, a small town in

                                                                              Reggio Emilia. Already as a child he had a strong interest in photog-

                                                                              raphy. Later on, he worked in a photo studio and was primarily active

                                                                              in the areas of post-processing and retouching. Over the years, he de-

                                                                              veloped a passion beyond photography for all the new techni ques of

                                                                              digital imaging technology that he uses today to create sensual

                                                                              shapes and spaces. Abstract landscapes, surreal environments and

                                                                              places that are sometimes closer, sometimes further away from real-

                                                                              ity are his favourite themes. On this spread as well as on pages

                                                                              008/009 and 056/057 we feature three of his works, which each rep-


                                                                              resent parts of larger series: The Migration series consists of three
                                                                              pictures. They show exotic scenes from distant countries. A flock of


                                                                              birds moves through these landscapes in strict geometric forma      tions

                                                                              – sometimes as a square, sometimes as a triangle or semicircle.


                                                                              Colonna imagines a nature with sharp corners and edges! The (Non)
                                                                              Gravità series, which comprises four motifs, is inspired by various

                                                                              buildings, such as the residence of architect Luis Barragán in Mexico

                                                                              City or the La Muralla Roja apartment complex by Ricardo Bofill. The

                                                                              fictitious architecture forms the background for individual objects

                                                                              which seem to have overcome gravity: a balloon, a plastic bag mov-

                                                                              ing in the wind, a bouncing basketball, and white paper planes.

                                                                              Ambiguous is the title of a series of four pictures that were inspired

                                                                              by minimalist open-air architecture and exotic landscapes. They cap-

                                                                              tivate the viewer and take him or her to a world of intense plays of

                                                                              light and shadow. The motifs are populated by a cat, a statue, a lad-

                                                                              der, respectively a hung-out bed sheet. Crossing through the image,

                                                                              they seem to subtly thwart the logic of architecture and leave us

                                                                              behind in amazement!
