(Non) Gravità

Massimo Colonna was born in 1986 in Scandiano, a small town in
Reggio Emilia. Already as a child he had a strong interest in photog-
raphy. Later on, he worked in a photo studio and was primarily active
in the areas of post-processing and retouching. Over the years, he de-
veloped a passion beyond photography for all the new techni ques of
digital imaging technology that he uses today to create sensual
shapes and spaces. Abstract landscapes, surreal environments and
places that are sometimes closer, sometimes further away from real-
ity are his favourite themes. On this spread as well as on pages
008/009 and 056/057 we feature three of his works, which each rep-
resent parts of larger series: The Migration series consists of three
pictures. They show exotic scenes from distant countries. A flock of
birds moves through these landscapes in strict geometric forma tions
– sometimes as a square, sometimes as a triangle or semicircle.
Colonna imagines a nature with sharp corners and edges! The (Non)
Gravità series, which comprises four motifs, is inspired by various
buildings, such as the residence of architect Luis Barragán in Mexico
City or the La Muralla Roja apartment complex by Ricardo Bofill. The
fictitious architecture forms the background for individual objects
which seem to have overcome gravity: a balloon, a plastic bag mov-
ing in the wind, a bouncing basketball, and white paper planes.
Ambiguous is the title of a series of four pictures that were inspired
by minimalist open-air architecture and exotic landscapes. They cap-
tivate the viewer and take him or her to a world of intense plays of
light and shadow. The motifs are populated by a cat, a statue, a lad-
der, respectively a hung-out bed sheet. Crossing through the image,
they seem to subtly thwart the logic of architecture and leave us
behind in amazement!
