HOUSE
IN VALENCIA
A house for a lifetime. That's what a couple wanted
their home in Bétera, 15 kilometres from Valencia, to
be for themselves and their two — for the moment —
small children. Thanks to a cleverly conceived, flexible
floor plan, that's exactly what they got. No matter how
many family members live here and what stage of life
they are in, there is enough space for everyone.
E ight identically sized rooms, each of which is separated only by
sliding walls fitted with acoustic panels or by simple wooden rol-
ler blinds, with no clear functional assignments except for the bath-
room and kitchen — these are the basic principles of the design. Archi-
tect Hugo Mompó, who lives and works in Mannheim and Valencia,
thus created a building plan that is extremely easy to change and can
be adapted to every phase of life and family constellation. Whether it
is a child's or parent's room, a living or working space, the furnishings
alone reveal what the rooms are currently used for. The sliding walls
divide the rectangular floor plan, which measures a good 140 square
metres, and at the same time allow the house to be completely ope-
ned up to create a uniform, continuous and horizontal interior space.
However, this division of space has another advantage: thanks to the
possibility of opening up the house almost completely, air conditio-
ning is not necessary; instead, the layout allows the wind to blow
through the house in the hot summers. Additional underfloor heating,
on the contrary, provides cosy warmth in the colder months. The well
thought-out simplicity of the structure is reinforced by the building
material used: ceramic tiles produced in the near vicinity act as the
smallest unit with their formats of 240 by 115 and 90 millimetres re-
spectively, thus defining the basic dimensions and the design of the
building. Curved ceramic tiles from Mallorca that are installed as a
roof complement the volume. As is usual in southern European coun-
tries, a large part of everyday life takes place outdoors. Therefore, it
does not come as a surprise that the terraced courtyard also features
a small pool to cool off in. The natural brown-reddish colour of the
tiles contrasts with the white-painted walls in the interior and also
lends the entire residence its unique character. Minimalist, quiet and
seemingly floating, this gem in the Valencian home province of the
owners offers its residents scope, openness and the necessary privacy
— completely tailored to the individual needs of each single member
