                                                                             D   resden is fortunate: The former power plant Kraftwerk Mitte Dresden, a striking
                                                                                 industrial wasteland from the 19th century, has now been renovated, converted
                                                                             and turned into a location for art, culture and the creative scene. For close to 100 years
                                                                             and just a stone’s throw from the historic Dresden centre, Kraftwerk Mitte has been
                                                                             producing energy for the Saxon state capital. In many respects, the industrial ensemble
                                                                             was among to the most striking places in the middle of Dresden. Together with the
                                                                             functional buildings, the enormous boiler house with its four chimney stacks – also cal-
                                                                             led Aurora by the people – characterized the city skyline. In the 1990s, the power sta-
                                                                             tion was replaced by more modern and environment-friendlier facilities. What remai-
                                                                             ned was an industrial area with the best inner-city location which was slowly decaying
                                                                             and partly demolished. Since 2008, the state capital undertook the gradual revitaliza-
                                                                             tion of the listed industrial wasteland. The core of the plans was the new building of
                                                                             the State Operetta Dresden and the tjg Theater Junge Generation on the site. A compe-
                                                                             tition was organized for the spectacular construction task.

               Kontrastreich sind auch die Nutzräume gestaltet. • The utility rooms are also designed with plenty of contrasts.  Based on the requirements of the new users as well as on the structures and qualities
                                                                             found on site, we developed a concept regarding the content and the space for transfor-
                                                                             ming the area. Centrally located, oriented towards the famous historic residence buil-
                                                                             dings of the old city such as the Zwinger, the Semperoper and the castle, our design was
                                                                             intended to continue the history of Dresden as a city of culture. The new venue consists
                                                                             of the renovated former machine hall and a new building. The State Operetta and the
                                                                             large stage of the tjg with 350 seats are now in the new building. The Puppet Theatre
                                                                             and the studio theatre (Black Box) of the tjg with 125 seats each as well as the theatre
                                                                             foyer are on the ground floor of the old building of the former machine hall. The equip-
               Ansicht West • View from the west                             ment of all the four stages meets today’s highest technical standards regarding the varia-
                                                                             bility of the stage podiums, the lighting systems and the acoustic controls. The new buil-
                                                                             ding adjacent to the historic fabric consists of a base designed to look closed with a sec-
                                                                             tion above it which differs in width as well as in height – the two mighty stage towers

                                                                             rated as to its function – are the rehearsal stages and rooms, the canteen as well as all
                    2                                                        the many indispensable specific functional areas of theatres such as the rooms for
                1                                                            tuning, make-up, the dressing rooms, tailoring workshops, stand-by workshops, rooms
                                                                             for storage and deliveries – a separate world for the approximately 1,300 theatregoers
                                                                             and the 400 employees. New and noticed beyond the region about the new venue is
                                                                             the fact that two different theatres – both popular traditional cultural venues in Dresden
                   6                                                         – have now been brought together here in a shared building and thus are able to deve-
                              4                                              lop new cultural synergies on the site where formerly energy was produced. A sequence
                                                                             of free spaces with various functions and qualities forms the setting for developing the
                                                                             area. They provide scope for the exchange between the cultural institutions and encou-
                                                                             rage contact with the audience. That the programmes the theatres are offering attract
