EARTH

Dear Readers,

New year — new team: Since the turn of the year, Kira Sophie Kawohl and Stephan Faulhaber have complemented the proven team of XIA by AIT. And with new energy,
we have dedicated ourselves to the topic of Earth for this issue. We thus start our annual canon of themes based on the four basic elements of earth, water, air and fire — according to the ancient Greeks, the building blocks of our world and the origin of all being. Earth stands for stability, reliability and determination — qualities that can certainly be attributed to the selected international architectural projects (from p. 26) made of clay, stone, concrete and wood. After all, what else do a golf clubhouse in Aqaba, a design office in Slovenia, a service building in the Dolomites or a modular building in Porto have in common with an underground animal crematorium, underground stations, buried residential or holiday homes or a meditation room next to a volcano? All these architectural trouvailles are on top, under or made of earth — in the broadest sense! New product developments in the corresponding material groups and technical applications in practice can be found in our report section (from p. 60). Two female representatives of our profession are featured in the series section (from p. 18). Natascha Bastos de Almeida presents her Master’s thesis at TU Darmstadt, and architect Kristin Reuther-Mercurio from Cologne provides insights into the conversion of a neo-Gothic townhouse into a guesthouse and hotel. As you turn the pages, be sure to take a look at the great photos of the Grandes Ensembles in Paris by Laurent Kronental — it’s worth it too!

Best wishes

WATER

Dear Readers,

good news in difficult times: XIA by AIT made it to the shortlist in the Best Trade Journal category in the competition for the Specialist Medium of the Year! After 25 years of xia intelligente architektur, we ventured a relaunch at the end of last year, and in January we competed for the coveted prize of the German specialist press with the first issue of XIA by AIT on the subject of Earth. The fact that we were among the top three in the category at the first attempt makes us proud and shows that we are heading in the right direction. Many thanks to the responsible editors Annette Weckesser and Katharina Göb, deputy editor-in-chief Dr. Uwe Bresan and our graphic designer Jürgen Hoffrichter! In our third xia issue, everything revolves around the topic of water (from p. 24). The wet element is just as relevant to the design of the diving tower in Millstatt as it is to the residential building in Darlington, the house of prayer in Abu Dhabi, the school building in Taklu Du, Thailand, or the latest rest stations along Norway’s National Scenic Routes. Project reports and products related to the subject of glass (p. 58) complement our report section, and in our series and sections on Student Work, Change of Perspective, Art + Architecture and Personalities — as in our cover picture — we focus on the human being in architecture. As a special service, we are sending this issue as an e-paper to all subscribers who are currently working from home — just send me a short note at pstephan@ait-online.de. Stay healthy and confident!

Best wishes

AIR

Dear Readers,

This latest issue of XIA by AIT has an airy touch. Not just because we tidied up the graphic layout a little as part of our redesign at the beginning of the year – we have made “air” the theme of this issue, because the four elements fire, water, air and earth are to determine the contents of XIA by AIT in future. Steel and glass therefore dominate our selected building projects, such as the office building in Nice with workplaces in the open air (p. 70), the glass market hall in Puyang (p. 78) or the hotel in Montpellier with a perforated metal façade (p. 96). In our practice section (from p. 58) we show application examples and the latest product developments in the field of façades and building services technology. Innovations for lighting and solar construction can be found in the report starting on page 110. On 19 March, the Fensterbau Frontale trade fair will be hosting the Forum Architecture-Window-Façade for the 10th time. Perhaps you can follow the lecture programme on the subject of “densification” at the exhibition centre? From page 22 onwards, an special section provides information about the programme and the projects of the five international speakers. A new feature of XIA by AIT is the Family
Affairs series – following the Böhm family (1-2020), we portray the architectural dynasty of the Rasch family. There are around 150 years between the representative of the first generation, Julius, and the youngest architect, Mustafa. On page 55, you can find out how the family’s architectural vocabulary has changed over this period. Have you noticed? We printed this issue on a different, more sustainable type of paper, and we think it feels quite good! As requested by many of our readers, we have started sending XIA by AIT without film packaging at the beginning of the year. Do you approve?

Best wishes
